Fans have already gotten a glimpse of Superman’s brand new costume debuting in Superman and the Authority #1 on July 20, but there were a whole host of potential designs for Superman’s costume which did not make the final cut. Thankfully, readers can judge them all for themselves.

The new series from writer Grant Morrison and artist Mikel Janín will explore Superman’s past and present, as the four-issue miniseries introduces a new superhero team to the current DC Universe, but also provides the DCU with a brand new standing for Superman stories as a whole. The miniseries will focus on Superman working together with Manchester Black, former leader of the Elite, to form a new version of the Authority in the face of a threat unlike any the universe has ever seen. Janín previously depicted the Man of Steel in last spring’s Future State: Superman: Worlds of War.

SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY

In a Tweet, Janín revealed all of the different costumes that he developed for Superman in this story. There is no denying that Superman’s costume is one of the most iconic ones in print, so a new take on the Superman costume is always exciting. With the story’s focus on Superman in both the past and the present, Janín had plenty of opportunity to present readers with a look that was both reminiscent of past versions of Superman’s costume while still being new, fresh, and fitting the magnitude of the story being told in Superman and the Authority. Check out Janín’s proposed costumes (and changes to Clark’s hair) below:

While Janín did not reveal a detailed look at the final short-sleeved costume in his Tweet, fans will love seeing the different directions the final look could have gone. The gray-haired Man of Steel sports a variety of costumes sure to be reminiscent of both the best and worst Superman costumes in his long history. Grays, blues, reds, and blacks all make appearances in the suggested outfits, and bring to mind the obviously-classic Kingdom Come suit and its classic underwear-over-the-pants look, as well as the Kryptonian “Recovery Suit” first seen in Action Comics #689. Superman also sports a beard in some of the images, indicative of a rugged, sadder, and definitely older Man of Steel – perhaps one more weathered by the way of the world?

The finalized new costume for Superman can be seen on the cover and inside the pages of Superman and the Authority #1, which readers can pick up digitally or in print starting July 20.
