Warning! Spoilers for Superman: Son of Kal-El #5 by DC Comics

In a landmark moment for representation in comics, Superman just shared his first kiss with his new boyfriend, Jay Nakamura. In Superman: Son of Kal-El #5 by DC Comics, Jon Kent is completely exhausted after saving many lives across the planet. After Jay offers him a place to rest his head, Superman awakens and shares a passionate kiss with Jay. It’s a beautiful moment between the two superpowered characters.

Jon Kent’s Superman made worldwide headlines last month when DC Comics revealed he would be coming out as bisexual in his ongoing series. DC teased he would develop a romance with reporter Jay Nakamura in Superman: Son of Kal-El #5. The announcement was met with mostly positive reactions who praised the creative team of Tom Taylor and John Timms. Having a character as big as Superman come out as bisexual was unquestionably huge for queer representation in comics. However, DC’s current Superman being bisexual also sparked outrage from reactionaries, such as former Superman actor Dean Cain. In addition, Gabe Eltaeb, the former colorist on the series, was allegedly fired from the book after making disparaging comments about DC Comics and the news.

SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY

In Superman: Son of Kal-El #5 by Tom Taylor, John Timms, Dave Sharpe, and Hi-Fi, Jon Kent flies to different countries as he continues being DC’s new Superman following his father’s decision to go to Warworld. Kent proves to be as heroic as his dad, as he saves countless lives throughout the day. However, when he falls to his knees after losing control of his powers, Aerie brings him to reporter Jay Nakamura, who offers Jon a place to rest his head. After sleeping for nine hours, Jay tells Superman he’s one person he doesn’t need to protect since he has his own powers. Then, after staring into each other’s eyes, Jon and Jay share a passionate kiss.

The moment is short-lived, as Superman is immediately alerted of danger nearby. When Jay suspects Jon might be bailing on him following the romantic moment, Superman says he will be back soon and leaves his cape with Nakamura. It’s an adorable sign that Jon doesn’t want Jay to think he’s flaking on him – but duty calls.
