In a cover for the forthcoming Batman #121, Lex Luthor Superman’s (arch nemesis) has turned into an evil version of the Dark Knight. The issue, the conclusion to the “Abyss” arc, will finally reveal Luthor’s true intentions towards Batman, Inc., which he recently acquired. The issue will be on sale in print and digital on  March 1, 2022.

When writer Grant Morrison took over writing Batman in 2006, they took the Dark Knight into bold new places, introducing his son Damian Wayne and temporarily replacing Bruce Wayne with Dick Grayson. When Wayne returned, he revealed he had been bankrolling Batman for years, leading to the next step in Morrison’s master plan: Batman, Inc. Using Wayne Corps’ massive array of resources, Bruce funded an international team of Bat-themed heroes, such as Batwing and Knight and Squire. Recently, Wayne lost a great deal of his fortune, as well as control of his company. This forced Batman and his allies to seek new methods of fighting crime and, as recently revealed, it also led Batman Inc. to falling into the hands of Lex Luthor. Readers have been curious for months as to Luthor’s intentions for the company and March’s Batman #121 will reveal his endgame.

In the meantime, a new cover gives a hint as to what Luthor has in store. The issue is written by Joshua Williamson and illustrated by Jorge Molina. DC Comics has provided League of Comic Geeks with a look at the cover of Batman #121, illustrated by Molina. In the foreground, Batman and Ghostmaker stand atop a building, ready for battle. Of even more interest, however, is Lex Luthor in the background. He is wearing a black and yellow variant of his traditional green and purple armor—and it comes decked out complete with a Bat-logo.

If Jorge Molina’s cover is any indication, then Luthor is seeking to become Batman himself—or at the very least gain access to Batman’s technology. Many of Batman’s gadgets and vehicles grew out of military contracts and, if Luthor obtained this, it would give him an even greater technological edge than he has now.  What is even more terrifying is Batman keeps extensive files on all of Earth’s heroes and villains—with a particular emphasis on their weaknesses. If Lex Luthor were to obtain such information, he would become even more dangerous. The files Batman already has on Superman alone would be of great interest to Luthor. Finally, both Luthor and Wayne are businessmen, with vast fortunes and enormous empires and Luthor could also be seeing himself snuff out a competitor.

Superman has long dealt with Lex Luthor’s evil, keeping him at bay for years but never able to fully defeat him. Now the Dark Knight is about to experience the same in Batman #121 when Luthor tries to become Batman himself.
