Superman’s parents have returned! Well, returned again. And we’re not referring to Jor-El, who it turned out survived Krypton’s destruction and kinda became a fugitive who eventually sparked a gigantic intergalactic war. Don’t worry, Superman and the rest of his family fixed that. However, as for the parents that actually raised Clark Kent on Earth, they passed away a long time ago. Ever since DC’s The New 52 launch, Ma and Pa Kent haven’t been around. Originally it was because they were dead, but as the Rebirth event happened, Johnathan and Martha Kent’s fate were left up in the air.

Now, Superman writer Brian Michael Bendis is looking to change that. In the pages of Superman: Villains, Bendis reveals that Clark’s parents are alive and well. What’s even stranger is that you can thank Watchmen for this reveal. Kind of. Recently, DC wrapped up their highly-anticipated series Doomsday Clock, which pitted Dr. Manhattan against Superman in the final issue. That series and the subsequent fallout was supposed to have major ramifications for the entire DC universe, including once again altering the histories of many DC characters. Finally, it seems like some of those effects are finally being made cannon.

Many aspects of Superman’s life have been confusing for readers in recent years. After The New 52 launch, even Superman’s creative team wasn’t exactly sure what parts of Superman’s history still counted. During the Rebirth event, many of the more convoluted elements of Superman’s life were ironed out and Clark was basically back to who he was before The New 52, albeit now he and Lois Lane had their son, Jon. Now we know that Clark’s parents are part of the equation as well, and longtime fans will no doubt be happy to see Jon and Martha there to be a supportive guiding force in the Man of Steel’s life.

Doomsday Clock was originally meant to usher in a sort of clean slate for the rest of the DC continuity, and now we might be seeing the effects of that. A big part of the final issue involved Dr. Manhattan changing reality, inspired by Superman and his actions. So it only seems fitting that part of those big changes in reality involved giving Clark his parents back. However, this isn’t all Superman: Villains has to offer. There are plenty of stories in this book that feature many other characters and bad guys all reacting to Superman revealing his secret identity. So if you think that some of Superman’s most notorious villains aren’t going to try and use this revelation to their advantage, think again. At least Clark has Ma and Pa back for moral support. Superman: Villains will hit store shelves on March 4th.
