If you want to understand how long Supernatural has been on the air, just know that it is the only show still running that began on the WB Network. That is now the CW Network and Supernatural is still running strong. 2019 marked the start of the fifteenth and final season.

The series has gone through its ups and downs through its run of over 300 episodes. But most would agree that the sophomore season was one of its best. Every episode scored at least an 8.1 on IMDb and that’s what we’re here to discuss. We look at the 10 best episodes of Supernatural season two, according to IMDb.

10 Croatoan (8.8)

The ninth episode of the season was called “Croatoan,” and it dealt with a deadly virus infecting an entire town. A lot of this episode took place in one room, as most of the characters hoped to avoid the virus. Sam ultimately got infected, but nothing happened to him.

This was one of the first signs that his demon blood made him special. Combine that with the virus itself and you’ve got an important episode in Supernatural lore. It helped that this was a fun hour of television with some tense drama and great character moments.

9 Heart (8.8)

Though it holds the same score as “Croatoan,” the seventeenth episode of season two “Heart,” has more user reviews. That puts it slightly above the previous entry. It allowed Sam to take a big step forward in getting over his girlfriend as he found a true connection with a girl named Madison.

However, she turned out to be a werewolf, giving us our first look at that creature in the series. Their chemistry was great, so seeing Sam have to kill her in the end was heartbreaking. Especially when Dean offered to do it, only for Sam to go through with it as a single tear fell.

8 Born Under A Bad Sign (8.9)

“Born Under A Bad Sign,” the fourteenth episode of the season, was one of the earliest to dig deep into the main storyline (which was the concept of Sam’s demon blood potentially driving him towards being evil). When we started the episode by discovering that he had been missing for a week, we thought the worst.

Thankfully, Sam hadn’t gone evil. But he was possessed by Meg, a demon from the first season. Though some viewers felt the episode started slow, you can’t help but be enthralled watching Sam say and do evil things. Singing “my daddy shot your daddy in the head” to Jo was haunting.

7 Roadkill (8.9)

With about 300 more reviews on IMDb, “Roadkill” ranks ahead of “Born Under A Bad Sign.” This was the sixteenth episode of the season and featured some fantastic guest acting work by Tricia Helfer. She starred as Molly, a woman who seeks help from the Winchester brothers.

They end up discovering that Molly is a ghost, except she doesn’t know it. She doesn’t realize that she’s stuck in a loop or that she killed someone. It was an interesting take on a ghost story and added variety to the series. The brothers helped her move on peacefully rather than as a vengeful spirit.

6 Nightshifter (9.0)

A Supernatural episode that opens with a bank heist and a hostage situation? It sounds odd on paper but as always, Supernatural made it work. “Nightshifter,” the twelfth installment, began like that and made us believe that the Winchesters were behind this.

Of course, it was actually just the return of shapeshifters. But the whole episode plays out intensely. It introduced us to Agent Hendrickson, put the Winchesters on the run from the law, and gave us the phenomenal music cue when “Renegade” by Styx hit.

5 All Hell Breaks Loose: Part 1 (9.2)

The first part of the season two finale was an outstanding adventure. The Yellow-Eyed Demon Azazel took Sam and the other “Special Children” away, sending them to a ghost town. Once there, he had them fight one another to the death. Who doesn’t enjoy watching a good battle royale? There’s a reason Azazel is considered one of the best demons in the show’s history.

This all went down as Dean and Bobby raced to find Sam. When they finally did, just as they were reuniting, Sam was murdered and fell into Dean’s arms. It was the first time one of the brothers died, so it was a huge shock. The incredible acting of Jensen Ackles added to the moment and it remains one of the best cliffhangers ever.

4 Tall Tales (9.2)

The Trickster is one of the most memorable villains in Supernatural history. Unlike other demons, he enjoyed the more comical side of things. Whenever he appeared, we were in for a trip. “Tall Tales,” the fifteenth episode of the season, was our first look at this awesome character.

This episode is filled with laughs. There are so many random, weird moments involving things like aliens and alligators. You couldn’t predict what was next, and bringing Bobby into the fray only made things more entertaining. A classic episode for a timeless bad guy.

3 In My Time Of Dying (9.3)

When season one ended with the three Winchester men getting hit by a truck, we were left to wonder what was next. Season two’s premiere dealt with that with “In My Time of Dying.” Sam was mostly okay, but a comatose Dean had his spirit wander the halls of the hospital.

As he did so, he dealt with a Reaper. This episode not only introduced them, but it also explained two major aspects of the series. We learned how vengeful spirits were formed and how deals are made with demons. It all led to John Winchester’s death, tying back to the core theme of this family’s fate.

2 What Is and What Should Never Be (9.4)

A lot of what made this season so special was the way it played with the emotions of the audience. “What Is and What Should Never Be” does that better than most. The twentieth episode of the season, it featured a creature called a Djinn (something most people would know of as a genie) who could warp reality.

The Djinn sent Dean into a life in Lawrence, Kansas where everything was fine. He had a steady girlfriend and his mother was alive. It was a crushing look at how badly Dean wanted to be normal. It helped solidify the way Dean viewed everything around him.

1 All Hell Breaks Loose: Part 2 (9.5)

When Supernatural fans hear “Carry On My Wayward Son” by Kansas, they know they’re in for something special. That song plays before every finale as it recaps the major points of the season. Picking up right after Sam’s death, this episode featured one of the show’s biggest moments.

Dean struck a deal with a demon, sacrificing his own soul to save his brother. It set up most of the show’s mythology going forward. And even though the exciting hour ended with the Winchesters defeating Azazel, they still kind of lost because the gates of hell were opened. Demons were loose on Earth and season three was expertly set up while wrapping up season two’s main arc.
