For 15 long years, the CW’s cult show, Supernatural, has entertained us with some mind-bending storylines and epic characters (quite literally!). The angel Castiel (Misha Collins) joined the show way back in the 4th season and quickly became a huge fan favorite. The audience has been as much invested in the journey of this taciturn angel, as they have been in the story of the Winchesters.

Of course, Castiel’s fate is inseparable from that of the brothers, but that is not to say that he doesn’t have an individual personality or his own fair share of experiences. Let us look at some details about this angel of the Lord that might have gone unnoticed.

10 Castiel Had A Female Vessel

Sometime in the past, possibly in the early 20th century, Castiel had walked the earth in a female vessel. This was when Castiel joined the angel Ishim’s flight to hunt a Nephilim whose father was the angel Akobel.

Very little is known about the woman who acted as his vessel at the time. But fun fact – this woman wore a pale trench coat just like the male vessel, Jimmy Novak, whom Cas currently possesses.

9 Castiel Can Send People Back In Time

For a long time now, Supernatural hasn’t dabbled in time travel as such. But there was a time when traveling through time wasn’t a big deal on this show, especially when there were powerful angels around with the juice to bend time and space.

While the angel Zachariah was shown to teleport Dean into the future, Castiel was able to send him into the past, to get a sneak peek into how and why Azazel came into the picture and how Sam’s existence was irrevocably tied to the past.

8 Castiel Would Have Loved His Cheeseburgers

In season 5, when the brothers were knee-deep in the fight to stop the Apocalypse from rearing its heads, Cas showed up gorging on cheeseburgers!

Although it was technically his vessel that loved red meat and happened to be affected by Famine, one of the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse, one can presume that had Cas lost all his angelic mojo, which he did for a while in fact, he would have had to eat, like all humans, and then he would have made a beeline for that hit of cholesterol.

7 Cas Almost Got Run Over By A Car & Then Crashed One Himself

Castiel, canon shows, has never exactly played it safe ever since he landed on earth and became pals with Sam and Dean. What most of us might have forgotten is that Cas almost got killed by a car once that almost ran him over.

In season 9, after Metatron had caused the angels to fall from Heaven, and stolen Cas’s grace, he wandered around alone which is when a car almost hit him. Soon after, he came across another angel Hael, who tried to possess his vessel, and Cas had to crash the car they were in intentionally, to prevent Hael from being in charge. The fan-favorite is a bit of a risk-taker.

6 Cas Is Vulnerable To Powerful Magic

When Cas was first introduced, he was a very powerful angel of the Lord. Of course, he was not the most powerful being around–after all, there were entities like Seraphs, Archangels, and the Satan in play–but he still had abilities that humans couldn’t even begin to imagine.

However, for all his powers, Cas has always been vulnerable to powerful magic. Whether it is an Enochian spell or a dark curse by the witch Rowena, the taciturn angel has been affected time and again by magic.

5 Castiel Is Not Above Backstabbing

This might sound bizarre but Cas has actually killed more than one person by stabbing them in the back, literally! In season 6, Cas killed Balthazar, another angel who had faked his death and escaped from Heaven to lead a life of indulgence on earth.

Balthazar had been a friend of Cas’s when they were both in Heaven, but the latter was not above stabbing him from behind. Later on, Cas killed Billie the Reaper in the same way, by sticking her in the back with an angel blade. In season 6, he was at least shown to have gone rogue, thus perhaps giving a context to his behavior, but killing Billie from behind wasn’t very cool.

4  Castiel Could Have Been A Demon

This is a little known fact but when Misha Collins, who plays Castiel, auditioned for the show, he actually thought his character was a demon.

Collins apparently appeared all nasty and snarky like a demon for his audition but was soon informed that his role was that of an angel. The writers had kept this fact under wraps so that the audience did not have a clue until the angel actually introduced himself.

3 Cas Might Be Married

Okay, this little detail might have slipped the minds of the audience! But remember that episode in season 13, where the boys get sucked into the animated world of the iconic Scooby gang?

Well, Cas soon joined in their hunt for a ghost, but before he too got transported into the world of Scooby, he happened to mention something about being married to the queen of Djinns! Now, he doesn’t dwell on this further, and the audience is left wondering how on earth this could have happened, until, bam! He gets sucked into the television and nobody remembers that Castiel might, in fact, be married.

2 Castiel Is Most Likely A Variant Of Cassiel

Castiel is not a name that appears in the Bible as such. There is a mention of one Cassiel in later texts; Cassiel is an angel of Thursday, which was very likely the source of inspiration for Castiel in Supernatural.

Both the angel Zachariah and the demon-turned-King-of-Hell Crowley refer to Castiel as the angel of Thursday, although there is no other reference in the show to Castiel’s role in the cosmos, except for following the orders of Heaven.

1 Castiel Was Only Supposed To Last Till Season 5

Actor Misha Collins stated that his character had joined the show when it was nearing the end of its run. As fans of Supernatural would know, the show had originally been planned for a five-season arc with the season 5 finale being the series finale.

Castiel was introduced in season 4; his arc brought with it the entire saga of the approaching apocalypse which Sam and Dean had to stop. Cas’s entrance in season 4 as a recurring character meant that he was originally intended to make brief guest appearances now and then until the show ended in season 5. But of course, God (Chuck?) had other plans.
