Supernatural has entered its final season after 15 long years. Over the years the show has given the audience myriad characters, but of course, the most memorable ones are those of the protagonists Sam (Jared Padalecki) and Dean (Jensen Ackles).

Dean Winchester is the Rambo-esque older brother of Sam, who started out with a tough-guy persona but evolved into a profoundly sensitive and caring character who feels things deeply even if he pretends not to. Here are a few things about Dean that not everyone might have noticed.

10 Ackles Could Have Ended Up Playing Sam

Not many people would know this but actor Jensen Ackles had initially auditioned for the role of Sam.

Yet, although he did audition for Sam, he apparently had a preference for the role of Dean from the start. It was only after Padalecki showed up that he got cast as Dean Winchester, the character that had originally appealed to him, and the rest is history!

9 Dean Has Been Played By 7 Actors

Supernatural has often taken the audience back in time or even into the future where the protagonists have appeared in different phases of life. Apart from Ackles, Dean has been played by several other actors over the years.

From the four-year-old Dean in season 1 to the fifty-year-old Dean in season 5, seven actors, including Jensen Ackles, have played the role of Dean Winchester at various stages of his life.

8 Dean Would Have Made An Awesome Car Mechanic

Now, had Dean led a so-called normal life instead of hunting monsters and locking horns with forces of Apocalyptic nature all the time, he would have made a fine car mechanic.

The 1967 Chevy Impala, that, as fans know is a character in itself on the show, was handed down to Dean by his father John Winchester. The car has seen the boys through all their ups and downs and has gone through some pretty tough times itself, getting banged up time and again. However, every time it took a blow for the boys, Dean put it back, working on it from scratch and bringing it back to life, as good as new.

7 Dean Has Died over a 100 Times On The Show

If there is anything that can be said with any finality on Supernatural, it is that death is not final. The show has made an art out of bringing dead people back to life. Everyone from the Winchesters themselves to Bobby Singer and Jack the Nephilim has come back from the dead.

However, when it comes to being killed, Dean Winchester takes the cake. Dean has died over 100 times in the space of a single episode back in season 3. Apart from that of course, he was killed in a car accident, dragged away by hellhounds, landed in Purgatory when he killed Dick Roman, etc.

6 Dean Is Into Cowboys

Dean Winchester is a huge fan of the Westerns. The show has taken the boys back in time into the 19th century into the evergreen stark ambiance of a classic Western drama.

Dean, typically, gets over-excited as he and Sam dress up as cowboys, getting into the character with all its swagger. He is consequently rather disappointed when it turns out that the Western is not quite as romantic as it is made out to be.

5 Dean Is Named After His Granny

Sam and Dean’s association with angels like Castiel and Zachariah have taken them back in time a few times, where they ended up seeing their parents before they were married and even meeting younger versions of their grandparents.

Dean found out that his maternal grandparents were called Samuel and Deanna, implying that Sam has been named after the boys’ grandfather and Dean after their grandmother. Deanna Campbell, Mary’s mother, was a hunter herself and was killed by the demon Azazel who had possessed her husband.

4 Dean Was Not Affected By Famine

In season 5, the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse are awakened one by one to prepare for the impending Apocalypse.

When Famine rises, even Castiel, who normally doesn’t need to eat, being an angel and all, starts hogging down cheeseburgers as his vessel gets hungry for food. But Dean remains unaffected, even though ideally he should have been loading up on pie and burgers, and maybe drinking himself to death. But Cas assumes that he is dead inside ever since he returned from Hell, which is why he does not feel hunger of any kind.

3 Ackles Has Directed Several Episodes of Supernatural

Not everyone might have noticed this but Ackles has donned the director’s hat more than once during the 15 years the show has been on air, the latest being in season 15.

From ‘Weekend At Bobby’s’ in season 6 to ‘Atomic Monsters’ in season 15, Ackles has had quite a run as he has directed episodes of the show that practically defined his career.

2 Latest Season Featured Dean’s Song

Ackles’ final directorial venture on Supernatural came in the form of ‘Atomic Monsters’ in season 15.

The episode features a song sung and performed by the actor himself: ‘Sounds of Someday.’ This original song is part of a music album that Ackles recently recorded, and was included during the climactic moments of the episode. This allowed the actor-director to show off another of his multi-pronged talents by demonstrating some of his musical prowess.

1 Dean Killed Hitler & Death

One might not be able to recall this momentous event off the top of their heads, given what the show has put its characters and audiences through, but Dean Winchester has the rare distinction of having killed both Hitler and Death.

In season 12, the boys had a run-in with a group of Nazi necromancers who apparently intended to resurrect Hitler. Of course, Sam and Dean had to stop that from happening, and Dean ended up killing Hitler–he was dead for good this time– and bragging about it a fair bit afterwards. Then again, in season 10, Dean kills Death himself with his own scythe, and the latter disintegrates in a cloud of dust.
