The brothers in Supernatural are rather complex and have a more than a complicated relationship with one another, especially after 15 seasons of air time. The brothers have had many ups and many, many downs. They have hated each other and loved each other like no one else on television.

But because the series is so long, there are many forgettable moments and facts about their relationship that have since long been forgotten from the earlier seasons. Information about their past and facts about their character that may have gone unnoticed or missed by the casual viewer.

10 Dean Is 4 Years Older

Dean is the older of the two brothers and is approximately 4 years older than Sam. So when Mary Winchester, the boys’ mother, is killed by the yellow-eyed demon, Dean is only 4 years old while Sam was only 6-months. Considering the relatively small age gap, Dean oftentimes acts much older than Sam in the earlier seasons as he often tries to take on the role of his father, to protect Sammy through all hardships. But as they age, Sam Winchester becomes the levelheaded Supernatural brother and acts way more mature than Dean.

9 Dean Carried Baby Sam Out Of The House

Dean was the one to carry Sam out of the burning house when Mary was killed by yellow-eyes, also known as Azazel. Mary was pinned to the roof of her bedroom and John, their father, fought to try and save her but nothing worked. Because he was the older brother, Dean took it upon himself to grab baby Sam, the demon’s real target during the attack, and leave the burning house. John later joins the boys outside, safe, and thus begins their demon-hunting careers.

8 Dean Sees Himself As Sam’s Protector

Because of their youth and parents, Dean sees himself as Sam’s protector, especially while they were young. Mary and John always told Dean that he needs to protect and watch out for Sammy, so Dean did just that.

He cooked dinner for Sam while John Winchester was out hunting and would care for the young boy. He took it upon himself to protect him and does this throughout the series of the show to the best of his abilities.

7 Sam Gave Dean The Amulet For Christmas

The amulet that Dean wears for the first five seasons of the series was actually gifted to him by Sam as a Christmas gift. The boys spent that Christmas alone in a motel room, awaiting their father’s return from a hunt. Dean has stolen presents from nearby rooms for Sam, but all of the presents were geared toward little girls. Upset that his father wasn’t going to be home for Christmas, Sam gave the amulet to Dean instead of his father, as he saw Dean as his main caretaker and protector.

6 Sam & Dean Go To The Same High School For One Year

Sam and Dean go to the same high school for exactly one year together. Sam is in ninth grade, while Dean is in twelfth. The two boys took a small break from hunting and living motel room to motel room to try and be “normal.” Once Sam is bullied by other school kids, Dean brutally threatens the boys but is discouraged by Sam. When Dean asks Sam why he wouldn’t teach those kids a lesson himself (due to his extensive combat abilities due to hunting), Sam simply says that he doesn’t want to be the weird kid and desperately wants a shot at normalcy in Supernatural.

5 Sam Doesn’t Talk To Dean For Two Years

After their high school time, Dean and Sam continue hunting for a few years with their dad, until Sam decides he wants to go away to college. Dean and their dad continue hunting together while Sam goes away to college in pursuit of a law degree, which is where he meets his girlfriend, Jessica. Jessica Moore becomes his everything in Supernatural and he plans on marrying her after graduation.

During his years in college, he doesn’t talk to Dean for two whole years, which directly leads to the beginning of the series when Dean appears at Sam’s place after not speaking to one another for a while but was all of a sudden thrust back into the hunting life.

4 They Would Save Each Other Over The World

On many occasions throughout the series, Sam and Dean risk their own lives for each other and for the sake of the world. It is assumed both of them have a sort of death wish in order to get out of the business. However, when it comes to each other, they would risk everything, everyone, in order to save the other. On numerous occasions have they chosen each other’s well being and safety over the world’s.

3 They Often Hold Resentment To Each Other

Though they love one another, they have often also held resentment for each other. In earlier seasons, Sam resents Dean for bringing him back into hunting and indirectly blames Dean for Jessica’s death. They each have done some pretty bad things to one another, like killing each other’s loved ones behind the other’s back, that would normally go unforgivable, but somehow these two brothers always come back.

2 They Always Forgive Each Other

In early seasons of Supernatural, Sam gives into his lust for demon blood because of the power that it gives him. He gets a bit corrupt which heavily strains his relationship with Dean. But Dean forgave him anyway. Later, Dean kills Sam’s first crush due to the fact that she was a kitsune who had been actively killing humans. Though this too caused a rift, the boys still managed to come together again like there were no problems between them.

1 They Are Each Other’s Weak Spots

It is often said throughout the series that each brother is the others’ weak spot. Dean’s main weakness is Sam and Sam’s main weakness is Dean. This is used against them on countless occasions, which usually has to do with sacrificing one of them for the sake of the other or humanity. As early as Supernatural‘s season 2, Dean makes a deal for his own to life to bring Sam back from the dead. He is given one year left which is the dominant plot in Supernatural‘s third season. Things like this happen time and time again throughout all fifteen seasons of the series, with each brother taking the role as the sacrificed.
