When Garth first appears on the show Supernatural, his character is jarring to the rest of the gang, to say the least. He is not the normal build for hunters that have appeared on the scene before. He is goofy and makes jokes that aren’t completely based on sarcasm, and one beer gets him blackout drunk.

Yet, somehow, he is a hunter and he is a huge help to Sam, Dean, and everyone else. Fans aren’t exactly thrilled with this character’s progression, though. It’s easy to see that the cheerful Garth who looks for the funny pages in the morning is Garth at his best. From there, he just gets worse and worse.

10 He’s Not The Typical Hunter

Garth is built small and wiry. He’s not tall and does not appear to be strong. He has a cheery disposition and an upbeat tambour to his voice. He doesn’t drink much and was shown to be black out status from one beer. He is clumsy and he hugs everyone with whom he becomes well acquainted with. Garth displays none of the characteristics of other hunters on the show. He doesn’t even wear a suit and pose as FBI when he is on a case. While it’s typical for there to be a variety among character types on a show, Garth’s differences do not appear to be practical for a hunter and it only gets worse from there.

9 Drives An El Camino Truck

After all the things about Garth that aren’t typical, he reminds fans that he is a hunter with his choice of an old classic car. Dean has the Impala and that is iconic. Other hunters have been shown with nondescript older cars but none of them are as iconic as the Winchester Impala. Garth shows up with his strange ways and viewers are not sure if he is there to stay. Then he drives off in an iconic El Camino truck. It clearly irks Dean as Garth drives away.

8 Can’t Hold His Alcohol

In the Season 7 episode “Party On Garth,” Garth calls on Sam and Dean to help him with a monster that can only be seen when drunk. His work on the case when the brothers arrive appeared clumsy, at best. The people there didn’t take much of a shine to Garth, aside from the little girl who would only talk to his sock puppet. Dean rolls his eyes more times than viewers can count at Garth’s behavior.

When they attempt to bond, Garth chugs a beer and ends up black out drunk from the one beverage. The action showed a weakness that could be dangerous around other hunters, according to Dean. Hunters drink together and not being able to go there is another limiting factor for Garth’s attempts at being an effective hunter.

7 Takes Over For Bobby

Dean is especially upset when he finds out that Garth took over Bobby’s job of assigning hunters and fooling government agencies into believing that the hunters are FBI. He walks around with several cell phones and answers them with feigned authority. This is similar to Bobby’s bank of land lines labeled in his kitchen, but an upgraded version. At Dean’s outrage, Garth tells him, “Bobby belonged to all of us.” He even wears one of Bobby’s old hats, which appears to upset Dean even more.

6 Uses Bad Costumes

Sam, Dean, and most other hunters that appear on the show wear simple suits and pose as FBI when they’re attempting to gather information from the authorities. They want to remain inconspicuous while also bypassing lesser authorities like police in a town where they have a case. Garth claims that the suits make him look like a funeral director. Instead, he poses as a Texas Ranger (while on a case in Missouri), an army soldier, and a park ranger, among other things. His disguises don’t appear to be particularly effective and he is shown to get by on either sheer awkwardness or the help of other hunters.

5 Tracks Hunters Without Asking

In Season 8, Sam finds out that Garth has been tracking their cell phone GPS systems in order to assign cases to hunters. When Sam yells at him about it and says it’s not appreciated, Garth’s response is “you’ve been Garthed.” Not only is he tracking without permission, but he jokes about it when Sam expresses that it upsets him. There’s also no indication that he ever stops. Sam and Dean say that they ditch their phones but if Garth tracked them before, he could do it again, and he didn’t say he wouldn’t.

4 Abandoning Kevin And His Mother

Kevin needs a place to interpret the Word of God away from people, but still safe. Garth apparently has a safe house boat where Kevin goes with his mother. Throughout the season and Season 9, Garth isn’t seen and the only mention of him is Kevin saying that he “drops by.”

Garth knows how important Kevin and his work is, and he knows that Kevin needs to be protected yet he leaves him alone and doesn’t assign anyone else to watch him. In the end, Kevin is kidnapped because no one is there to protect him and Garth is nowhere to be found.

3 Secret Werewolf Transformation

After abandoning Kevin, Garth disappears for several months. One minute, he’s the new Bobby. He’s taking calls and coordinating hunters all over the country. Then all of a sudden he’s missing and no one knows where he is or what happened to him. When he’s found, Sam and Dean discover that he turned into a werewolf and got married to another werewolf. He isn’t feeding on people, but his in-laws are. Sam and Dean are livid that Garth didn’t tell them about what happened to him. They assert that they could have helped him figure things out before it got to the point of having to kill his new wife’s family. When the troublesome werewolves are dealt with, Garth goes off with his wife and says nothing about who will coordinate hunters or if he’s even going to continue hunting as a werewolf.

2 One Of Michael’s Monsters

In Season 14, Sam taps Garth to go undercover in Michael’s inner circle to find out what his plans are. Garth finds out that Michael is planning to transform all of his “volunteers” and everyone else in Kansas City into his monsters, controlled by him. Garth claims that he can withstand the change, even if he has to drink the serum that Michael is handing out to the monsters around him. Garth is forced to succumb and becomes one of the monsters to be controlled by Michael. When Dean locks Michael away in his mind, Michael loses influence over all the monsters he ensnared, including Garth.

1 He Becomes A Family Man

Season 15 show Garth with his wife in an idyllic family setting, complete with twins named Sam and Castiel. He appears to be living the good life and the whole episode seems to mock Sam and Dean and the way they live versus Garth’s wife and kids. After all the people that they lost and all the ways Garth didn’t help, he gets to have everything Sam and Dean never did. Sam and Dean appear dumbstruck at his life and at that point, they know that Chuck/God has been using them to further the story he created. He never apologizes for abandoning Kevin or for sitting out the fight until his colossal failure with Michael. Even worse, he became a dentist and drilled Dean’s cavities.
