While on many levels, Dean Winchester is a layered, complicated, and troubled character, he is simple in that he loves what he loves and that never really changes. He adores and feels responsible for his younger brother, as well as Castiel; he loves pie, he loves classic rock, and, of course, he cannot live without his 1967 Chevrolet Impala, ‘Baby,’ an important and iconic part of Supernatural.

The love Dean has for his car/home/part of the family is partly displayed through a slew of quotes in the show’s fifteen seasons that range from house rules of the car, caring for and driving the car, and just straight up treating the car like his baby.

10 “Hands Off The Wheel!”

‘Baby’ is an episode dedicated to the Impala and is one of the show’s very best over its fifteen seasons. This quote from Dean is not about the car but rather his relationship with it and his rules. It is simple, fleeting, but great.

As ‘Night Moves’ plays and fans get a look at what day-to-day driving for a hunt looks like for the boys, there is a split second Sam reaches for the wheel, only to have his hand slapped away and to be told, “Hands off the wheel.” It is great because it is a genuinely happy few minutes with the brothers, with Dean still treating Sammy like his younger brother, not letting him mess with his car when he drives, just like the early days of the show.

9 “You Leave My Baby Alone She’s Got Nothing To Do With This.”

Sam and Dean, throughout Supernatural, find themselves and their loved ones possessed. It is part and parcel of the job. What Dean does not stand for is a spirit possessing his car.

In “Mannequin 3: The Reckoning,” that is what happens as a spirit takes over Dean’s Impala, prompting a hilarious “No. No way. No no no no no no. She possesses sex dolls, this is not a sex doll.” before he demands the spirit leave his Baby be. Dean’s everlasting love for his car is one of the best dynamics in Supernatural.

8 “Murder. I’d Murder ‘Em All.”

There has never been any questioning Dean’s loyalty to those people and things he loves. In fact, if anything, he is loyal to a fault. When it comes to the Impala, he feels passionate about her safety and place in his life.

In “A Most Holy Man,” Sam asks Dean what he would do if someone stole the Impala and his immediate response is “Murder, I’d murder ’em all.” and when Sam tries to tell Dean his point relating to the case, Dean pays no attention, continuing to say “There’ll be torture first. There’d be, like, a lot of torture, and then there’d – it would end up with death. If I can’t have it, nobody can.” Dean Winchester cannot and will not live without Baby.

7 “New Rule; You Steal My Baby, You Get Punched.”

Dean has always had a hard time with letting Sam take and drive the Impala; even when he dies or plans to die, he is tentative about giving up his Baby to Sam. So, when Sam takes her without Dean’s permission, it does not end well for him.

Sam does just this in “The Girl Next Door,” as he goes to talk to his old Kitsune friend Amy with the Impala. Upon his return to the motel, he is swiftly and hilariously punched by Dean and told about the new rules. As much as Dean may love Sam, not even he gets away with mistreating, mishandling, or even using the Impala without Dean’s knowledge.

6 “At Least My Baby Made It.”

Supernatural showed a serious talent for being meta over the years, and “The French Mistake” may very well be the best example of that where Dean and Sam are sent to a world where their lives are the plot of a show called Supernatural.

The episode has a slew of great quotes, and this Impala-related one is so good because of the sudden switch from happiness to sadness for Dean. Going around the corner on set, he spots his Baby only to be met with a parking lot full of Impala’s used for the show, prompting Dean to say, “Hey. Hey! What — I feel sick. I’m gonna be sick. I want to go home. I feel like this whole place is bad-touching me.”

5 “You Tend To Ride The Breaks… Just Imagine She’s, She’s A Beautiful Woman. A Beautiful, Beautiful Woman, Sam.”

Dean’s romantic history is not the best. His life and who he is deep down never really allowed it to happen for him, even if he got close with the likes of Lisa. The Impala, though, is so often treated like Dean’s significant other.

One of the best examples of this comes when Dean makes sure Dean takes care of the Impala as he goes in search of the Hellhound Ramsay with Crowley. What is so funny about this moment is Sam assuming Dean’s talking about Gwen when he says, “Take care of her.” Dean’s love, softness, and care towards his Baby never got matched in the show.

4 “You Were Supposed To Take Care Of Her, Not Douche Her Up.”

Even though Dean does not like relinquishing the Impala, there were times he was OK leaving it with Sam, such as when he went to Hell. What he was not OK with was the changes to the car Sam made, with his younger brother putting an iPod jack in the car.

Of course, Sam’s point of view is understandable. He could never have predicted a Dean-loving angel would grip him tight and raise him from perdition. Nonetheless, it is hilarious how appalled Dean is at how Sam douched Baby up. Even if iPods are more convenient, there is something inherently Dean about his old rock and cassette collection.

3 “Hey, Baby.”

The Supernatural finale is going to be picked apart by the fandom for years to come for its flaws and how it did or did not affect the fifteen seasons behind it. It did have some incredibly touching moments, though, like Dean and the Impala in Heaven.

Not only was the scene the perfect position for the iconic “Carry On Wayward Son,” but there was a level of calmness and happiness in Dean that was nice to see, even if the whole thing overall went against the core of the show. Dean’s “Hey, Baby.” to the Impala was just a simple, lovely moment for the character finally at peace.

2 “Driver Picks The Music, Shotgun Shuts His Cakehole.”

Another quote that is more about the driving, and the rules of the Impala rather than the Impala herself, is one of the show’s most iconic and beloved quotes, coming in the pilot episode from over fifteen years ago.

“Driver picks the music, shotgun shuts his cakehole.” is a motto many fans have adopted, with good reason. Their personalities and the dynamic between the brothers are immediately brought to light wonderfully in the pilot, and this moment is a key part of that. It is hilarious, and all these years later, it is a moment thought about so fondly by the fans.

1 “Woo. Listen To Her Purr, You Ever Heard Anything So Sweet?” “Oh, Don’t Listen To Him Baby, He Doesn’t Understand Us.”

The Impala goes through a lot. It is destroyed multiple times over the course of the show, with Dean rebuilding her time and time again. When he does so in season 2, it is the most visibly happy he had been since Azazel destroyed it in the season 1 finale.

Riding down the highway with “Back in Black” blasting on the stereo, Sam asks Dean if he wants a room with the car due to the excitement and jubilance he shows, with these two great Dean quotes at either side of the question. It is an iconic, great scene showing off Dean’s handiwork on his Baby, with Dean admitting things are looking up because “I got my car.”
