Supernatural’s “Into The Mystic” found the Winchesters dealing with a banshee. For fifteen seasons the Winchester brothers Sam and Dean have been hunting every kind of supernatural being, from ghosts to demons and even angels. The show began with the duo looking for their missing father John (Jeffrey Dean Morgan), and over the years they’ve encountered just about every kind of foe, from vampires right up to Lucifer himself.

It’s unlikely that anyone involved with Supernatural could foresee it lasting fifteen years, with the show’s creator Eric Kripke originally imagining it would run for five seasons max. While the series has had its high and low points over the years, it was always held together by the strength of its cast, from leads Jensen Ackles and Jared Padelecki to supporting players like Jim Beaver or Misha Collins. Supernatural is set to end in late 2020, though there’s also always the possibility of a future revival.

SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY

Supernatural season 11 episode “Into The Mystic” is a monster of the week installment and a good one at that. It opens in Ireland in the 1980s, where a mother and father are comforting their crying baby when the father is driven mad by the screeching of a banshee. This causes him to especially split his own skull open by banging his head against the wall, while the mother dies protecting their baby from the creature. The show then cuts to the present day, where Sam and Dean investigate the mysterious death of a retirement home resident.

It’s the same banshee causing these deaths, with the creature being hunted by a deaf hunter named Eileen – who turns out to be the baby from the opening scene. Supernatural “Into The Mystic” also features Lucifer walking around in Castiel’s possessed body, and he’s attacked by another angel. Lucifer claims he wants to stop The Darkness – AKA Amara – but swiftly explodes the angel when he tries to kill him. Dean later admits to Cass – not knowing he’s possessed – that he’s had two chances to kill Amara, but he couldn’t bring himself to do it due to an uncontrollable attraction.

The big battle of Supernatural “Into The Mystic” sees Sam, Dean and Eileen team up to protect resident Mildred (Dee Wallace, Cujo) from the banshee, who they believe with be its next target. Dee Wallace proves to be one of the episode highlights, with Mildred making no secret of her attraction to Dean and the two later sharing a heartfelt chat before the banshee attacks. It actually goes after Dean but the fight itself is somewhat anti-climatic and the creature is easily defeated, with Eileen delivering the killing blow. The boys bid goodbye to both Eileen and Mildred the next day, while Sam wonders why the banshee attacked Dean since it only goes after those who are vulnerable. Wishing to keep his thoughts about Amara to himself, Dean makes up a story but is clearly worried about what will happen the next time they meet.
