The Supernatural prequel series The Winchesters casts the younger version of Sam and Dean’s parents in the upcoming CW drama. The show became the flagship series for The CW when the network launched in 2006. Focused on two brothers taking on mythical threats and monsters, Supernatural became a cult series worldwide as fans continued to tune in season after season. Currently, Supernatural holds the title as The CW’s longest-running series, having aired 327 episodes in total.

Barely two years after its series finale in November 2020, The CW is already revisiting the Supernatural universe. One of the network’s new projects for the pilot season is a prequel series titled The Winchesters. While Supernatural featured Sam and Dean’s parents in various capacities, The Winchesters will focus entirely on the parents in their younger years, featuring the untold stories of their romance before the events of the original series. Dean Winchester himself, Jensen Ackles, is attached as both executive producer and the narrator for the potential drama.

As the pilot is getting ready to start shooting, The Winchesters have finally found the titular characters themselves. TVLine revealed that Drake Rodger (The In Between) and Meg Donnelly (American Housewife) have landed the roles of young John and Mary. The roles were originally portrayed by Jeffrey Dean Morgan and Samantha Smith. Here’s how Warner Bros. TV and The CW describe The Winchesters’ take on Sam and Dean’s parents:

“JOHN WINCHESTER: Recently returned from Vietnam, the selfless and clearheaded John Winchester finds a new mission back home, where traces of his father’s past lead him to a secret organization and a whole new war as a hunter,” says the official description.

MARY CAMPBELL: 19 years old Mary Campbell has been fighting the forces of darkness since she was a child. After losing someone close to her, the hardened hunter considers quitting the family business — until her father’s disappearance and the arrival of newcomer John Winchester forces her to lead a new team.”

Rodger and Donnelly are the latest to board the potential Supernatural offshoot, as Nida Kurshid and Jojo Fleites were recently added as series regulars. Kurshid will play Latika Desai, who is a young aspiring hunter, while Fleites is set to play Carlos Cervantez, an optimistic experienced demon fighter. Should The Winchesters move forward, it would be the first Supernatural spinoff to go beyond the pilot stages. The CW has in previous years made two attempts at expanding the Supernatural franchise, with Supernatural: Bloodlines and Wayward Sisters, which received backdoor pilots in the 9th and 20th seasons respectively before being passed on.

Given the massive popularity of SupernaturalThe Winchesters’ chances of scoring an official series pick-up are looking very promising, especially as The CW tries to fill the void of the original series. However, one potential obstacle that could prevent the prequel drama from joining the previously failed spinoffs is The CW’s current sale situation. As the network’s owners, WarnerMedia and Paramount, have put it up for sale, it might be up to the new owner (whoever that may be) if The Winchesters is part of the 2022-2023 TV season. Due to the potential sale, The CW has yet to renew or cancel most of its ongoing shows for next year. As The Winchesters get ready to start production, fans may have to wait till the network’s upfront presentation in May to learn if the Supernatural prequel is a go or not.
