There is perhaps no theme or idea as prominent and as significant in Supernatural as family. Throughout 15 seasons of the show, audiences are taught the value of family, the importance of being there for one another through the good times and the bad. The series also explores what family is and how it is not just blood relatives, doing so through so many fantastic quotes.

Whether they be single, emotional lines, or powerful monologues, dramatic quotes about family are prevalent in Supernatural, coming from both the Winchester brothers and the other members of Team Free Will.

10 “When It All Came Down To It, It Was Always You & Me. It’s Always Been You & Me.” – Dean Winchester

The death of Dean Winchester and the finale of Supernatural, overall, is a divisive topic. To many, “Carry On” made a lot of mistakes and was far from a fitting finale for the Winchester brothers. There is no denying it is emotional saying goodbye to Dean.

While dying, he and Sam have a heartbreaking conversation in which Dean tells Sam how much he loves him and how proud of him he is. Dean also gives him this line, which could not be any truer. Through it all, the good and the bad, they were together, they always came back to one another, and the brotherly bond between them was indestructible.

9 “No Matter What Shape You’re In, Bottom Line Is, You’re Family.” – Dean Winchester

Bobby Singer, to many fans, is the true father figure for Sam and Dean Winchester, and so when the Winchester’s found out how badly Bobby was struggling mentally with his new life in a wheelchair, it was not easy.

After experiencing old age in “The Curious Case of Dean Winchester” and learning about Bobby’s desire to end his life, Dean gives Bobby a heartfelt speech. Dean tells Bobby he cannot give up, he cannot stop fighting, and that, most importantly, he is family, and nothing can change that. No physical, mental, or emotional illness or ailment can ever separate that bond.

8 “You Saved My Life, Over And Over. I Mean, You Sacrifice Everything For Me …” – Sam Winchester

Full quote: “… Don’t you think I’d do the same thing for you? You’re my big brother. There’s nothing I wouldn’t do for you.”

The two-part season 2 finale gives fans two of the best familial quotes, first this, and also, “I’m going to take care of you. I’ve got you, that’s my job, right? Watch after my pain in the ass, little brother,” coming when Sam heartbreakingly dies in Dean’s arms.

These two quotes perfectly exemplify the love the two share this early in the show and their selflessness regarding the other. Dean believes it is his job to look after Sam and Sam believes that it is a two-way street. They are so painstakingly dedicated to protecting one another, no matter the cost.

7 “Well Call It Personal Experience,  But Nobody Gets That Angry Unless They’re Talking About Their Family.” – Dean Winchester

The Winchesters and subsequently Team Free Will and its extended family are not the only families that are focused on in Supernatural. Many angelic dynamics are explored, including Gabriel’s touchy relationship with his three archangel brothers and his father.

In one of the show’s best-ever episodes, “Changing Channels,” fans are let in on the reveal that the Trickster is, in fact, Gabriel. Dean hits him with this quote as a reason for unveiling such a secret, and it is so true. Look at the likes of Sam and Dean, or them and Bobby, or them and John. The amount of frustration and annoyance they cause each other is immense, but they are family.

6 “Family Don’t End With Blood, Boy!” – Bobby Singer

One of the most iconic quotes in Supernatural is this one, from the mouth of Bobby Singer. It comes as he gets annoyed at Dean for attempting to leave him behind in his and Sam’s mission to kill Lilith in the season 3 finale.

Bobby Singer not only helped raise the boys, but he was there for them, no matter what through adulthood. He never gave up on them and never let them give up on each other. He was family. The idea that family is not who shares DNA is a powerful one and relevant to Supernatural. The likes of Bobby, Castiel, Jack, Ellen, Jo, Jodie, Kevin, Charlie, and more are all family, no matter what a blood test may say.

5 “I’m Getting That Life Isn’t All About These Big Amazing Moments. It’s The Time Together That Matters.” – Jack Kline

Jack Kline is one of the best Supernatural characters to debut after the first season. But this doesn’t make him any less of a member of Team Free Will, nor any less of a part of the family.

In “Unhuman Nature,” when it appears Jack is somehow dying while fishing and having quality time with Dean, Jack says this line. It rings true for so many people. The two were simply driving and fishing and loved it. At the point of “Unhuman Nature,” Jack had a short but wonderful life because he was surrounded by Dean, Sam, and Cas — by family — by those who matter most.

4 “Up Against Good, Evil, Angels, Devils, Destiny, And God Himself, They Made Their Own Choice. They Chose Family ” – Chuck

To this day, many Supernatural fans maintain that “Swan Song” is the pinnacle of the show, and it is hard to argue against it. The episode is narrated by Chuck wonderfully, with so many great lines about the Impala and about the Winchesters.

This is one of the best quotes of the episode and has a definite sense of finality to it. In that five-season arc of the Kripke-era, Sam and Dean went from facing a Woman in White to fighting against Archangels, against the wills of heaven and hell, together. And they won. Despite it being shoved down their throats that this was their destiny, they chose their own path as a family and defied all odds.

3 “This Sad, Doomed Little World, It Needs You. It Needs Every Last Winchester It Can Get. I Will Not Let You Die …” – Castiel

Full quote: “… I won’t let any of you die. I won’t let you sacrifice yourselves. You mean too much to me, to everything.”

If there is anyone who has as much faith in Sam and Dean as much as they have in each other, and as much as Bobby has in them, it is Castiel. His love for the brothers shines through constantly, including when he kills Billie.

Saving them from what he calls a “bad deal,” Castiel refuses to see any of the three Winchester’s die. They mean too much to him and the world, whether they know it or not. It is a moving speech from Cas, who is just as willing to give his life, and put it in danger for the Winchesters as they are for him.

2 “Are You Under The Impression That Family’s Meant To Make You Feel Good?! Make You An Apple Pie, Maybe?” – Bobby Singer

Full quote: “… They’re supposed to make you miserable! That’s why they’re family.”

Bobby’s grouchy nature gives way for some hilarious quotes in Supernatural and some powerful ones that are usually said to knock some sense into one of the brothers. In this instance, it was Dean.

Refusing to let Dean give up on Sam, he tells Dean to grow up and get over his hurt feelings, exclaiming that family is supposed to make each other miserable. While it may be harsh, it is a reality. As much as family pulls through for one another, they drive each other up the wall, and the Supernatural family is no different.

1 “Once A Wise Man Told Me ‘Family Don’t End In Blood.’ But It Doesn’t Start There Either …” – Dean Winchester

Full quote: … Family cares about you. Not what you can do for them. Family is there for the good, bad, all of it. They got your back, even when it hurts. That’s family.”

Dean and Crowley have one of the best dynamics in Supernatural, and while sharing a couple of drinks post-Rowena attack on Dean, the Winchester hits the King of Hell with one of his best speeches in the entire series.

This speech concerns Rowena and her treatment of Crowley, which he justifies as being because she is blood, going back to the idea that true family has nothing to do with blood.
