The CW’s Supernatural has been on TV for over fifteen years and the two leading men, Jared Padalecki and Jensen Ackles have been there for every single episode. However, as Supernatural is not your average show, they were not always the Sam and Dean that fans know and love.

Instead, there has been a variety of alternate Sam and Dean’s. In the latest episode, fans were treated to the fun and sophisticated versions of the Winchester brothers from an alternate dimension that was being destroyed by Chuck. Therefore it is worth looking at all the other versions of Sam and Dean. Here is a list of the ten best of them.

10 “Normal” Sam and Dean

In the season two episode, “What Is And What Should Never Be”, Dean seemingly finally gets his deepest wish – his mother was never killed. Therefore, Sam and Dean’s lives carry on as normal without any supernatural interruptions.

Sam is a little more pretentious while Dean is just an average guy who also may have a drinking problem. Importantly, this version of the brothers do not get along at all and Dean slowly realizes that his dream world is far from perfect. In the end, fans were happy to see the real Sam save Dean from his “normal” life.

9 Meg Possessed Sam

The early seasons of Supernatural are its scariest and one of those terrifying episodes was the season two thriller, “Born Under A Bad Sign”. In this episode, the normally harmless Sam is possessed by Meg and turns into a chain-smoking sadist.

In the episode, he goes after Jo who thinks he is still sweet ol’ Sam but the demon-possessed Sam instead harasses and tortures her. This cold and evil version of Sam sent chills down everyone’s spines and fans were happy to see Sam return to his old self.

8 Demon Dean

Everybody loves a bad guy and fans had a blast with Demon Dean in season eleven. After being killed by Metatron at the end of season ten, Dean becomes a callous and bloodthirsty demon.

As a demon, Dean doesn’t really care for anyone or anything, even his beloved Baby which he basically uses as a garbage bin. This Dean also seemingly has no inhibitions, and fans were treated to an awkward off-key karaoke singing Dean. Luckily, he was soon captured and cured by Sam and Cas.

7 Soulless Sam

Sam Winchester was always caring and compassionate however this all changed in season six. Somewhere at the beginning of the season, Sam gets taken from the Cage but his soul is left behind.

So, he turns in to a sociopathic version of himself. He is colder, calculating and doesn’t care about anyone else. This version of Sam was completely fine with sacrificing Dean and even tried to kill Bobby. Fortunately, Soulless Sam doesn’t last for too long and his soul is soon returned to his body.

6 Actors Sam and Dean

As all Supernatural fans know, the show can get a little weird but no one was really prepared for the insane meta episode “French Mistake.” Sam and Dean get sent to an alternate universe where they are the actors Jared Padalecki and Jensen Ackles in their own version of Supernatural.

In order to keep up appearances, they have to pretend to be self-obsessed and snobby actors. Obviously all sorts of hijinks ensue that includes an embarrassingly hilarious scene where the brothers try and dismally fail to act.

5 Leviathan Sam and Dean

The Leviathan arch in season seven is often argued by fans as one of the worst, however, it did also give fans Leviathan Sam and Dean. Two Leviathans take the form of Sam and Dean and commit crimes across the country in order to frame them.

The Leviathan versions hate humans and are exasperated by the brother’s emotional issues. Nonetheless, they were a bright spark in an otherwise dismal season and also gave us one of the weirdest exchanges on TV about what to do with a problematic brother – eat him.

4 Post-Apocalyptic Dean

Easily the best alternate version of Dean appeared in the season five episode “The End.”  Zachariah sends Dean into the future where he doesn’t say yes to Michael, the Croatoan virus breaks out and everyone turns into zombies.

Fans are introduced to the post-apocalyptic Dean who is the leader of a small compound of non-infected humans. This Dean is clearly hardened by the Apocolypse, is far more ruthless and unlike the other Dean, is willing to kill Sam in order to stop Lucifer.

3 Huntercorp Sam And Dean

The finale season of Supernatural has spent a lot of time delving into the alternate universes and fans were pleasantly surprised to see an alternate version of Sam and Dean appear in the bunker.

These Huntercorp versions of Sam and Dean are wealthy, pretentious, uptight and very pedantic about their looks. While the alternate Dean seems to be a lot more relaxed and willing to change, the man-bun wearing Sam is a lot more snobby and ridiculous. These two versions of the brothers were fun to watch and were a much-needed breather from the intensity of the final season.

2 Sam Wesson and Dean Smith

In the season four episode, “It’s A Terrible Life,” the angel Zachariah creates alternate versions of Sam and Dean where they are neither hunters nor brothers.

In the episode, Dean is a healthy eating high-powered corporate manager while Sam is a lonely and nerdy tech support worker. Although the two don’t get along at first, they eventually hunt down a ghost and prove that hunting monsters are in their blood.

1 Archangel Sam and Dean

In season five of Supernatural, it is revealed that Sam and Dean are the preordained vessels for the archangel brothers Lucifer and Michael. Fans get their first glimpse of an alternate Sam in the episode “The End,” where he plays the smug, ruthless and yet charming Lucifer.

While Dean finally says yes to the alternate version of Michael in season thirteen. This possessed version of Dean is cruel, calculating and weirdly, very well dressed. Overall, the archangel versions of the two brothers were terrifying but very entertaining to watch.
