In Supernatural season 6, episode 16, “And Then There Were None,” Bobby Singer (Jim Beaver) and Rufus Turner (Steven Williams) discussed a supposed incident in Omaha that caused a rift in their friendship. During the episode, Bobby and Rufus were reunited to investigate an increase in monster appearances. Bobby attempted to apologize to Rufus for a botched hunt in which someone that Rufus cared for was killed. Before Bobby could finish his apology, Rufus interrupted and made it clear that he couldn’t forgive Bobby for what went down. So, what happened in Omaha?

Supernatural made a historic 15 season run on the CW, centering around brothers Sam and Dean Winchester, who are a pair of monster hunters. Sam and Dean were played by many actors, but the primary versions of the characters were portrayed by Jared Padalecki and Jensen Ackles, respectively. Many other monster hunters were introduced throughout the show’s run, and this included Bobby. Bobby was an old friend of John Winchester (Sam and Dean’s father) and became a mentor figure for the brothers. Bobby was brought into the world of monster hunting when his wife, Karen Singer, was possessed by a demon. Bobby was forced to kill Karen, but Rufus helped exorcise the demon and cover up the death. For years after, Bobby and Rufus hunted together.

However, this all came to an end after the hunt in Omaha. On a complicated mission, Rufus and Bobby needed a getaway driver. Bobby (originally intended to be a one-off character) decided to bring in Rufus’ daughter as the third member of the team. This was against Rufus’ knowledge and led to a tragic turn of events. Before the monster hunters could slay the creature, Rufus’ daughter was killed. This was revealed in the book Supernatural: Bobby Singer’s Guide to Hunting, which is regarded as official canon.

When hunting together in Supernatural season 6, Bobby told Rufus that they could “either sit here on our thumbs or they go in guns blazing.” Rufus then replied, “like Omaha?” This conversation implied that the mistakes of the Omaha hunt could have been prevented if only there was more caution in their plan. While it was clearly Bobby’s fault that Rufus’ daughter was put in danger, he was also visibly distressed over any mention of the disaster. His guilt was prevalent during the exchange, telling Rufus that bringing up Omaha was a “low blow.”

Supernatural’s monsters were brutal, and misfortune was all too common when hunting them. Even a close friendship, like what Bobby and Rufus shared, could be destroyed by the stresses that were put on hunters. Just shortly after their conversation about Omaha, Bobby was infected by a monster called the “Khan worm.” When Rufus tried to remove the creature, the worm forced Bobby to kill Rufus. Bobby would see Rufus in grief-ridden flashbacks and coma dreams until the pair were reunited in heaven at the end of Supernatural season 15.
