Supernatural’s “About A Boy” saw Dean going through literal growing pains as a witch turns him into a teenager. For fifteen seasons Supernatural has followed the exploits of the Winchester brothers Sam (Jared Padalecki, Friday The 13th 2009) and Dean (Jensen Ackles). The boys were raised by their father to hunt and destroy demons, witches and monsters of all varieties, which they do with gusto. While the show’s faith was uncertain during early seasons, it surpassed all expectations by running for over fifteen years.

This was largely down to the relationship between Sam and Dean, with fans being drawn to their close bond. Supernatural has produced many memorable supporting players over the years too, including Felicia Day’s Charlie, Lucifer, Bobby and Jo Harvelle. The franchise has received spinoff comics and novels in addition to Supernatural: The Anime Series, which lasted for one season; while Padalecki voiced Sam for every episode in the English dub, scheduling issues meant Ackles only voiced Dean for two.

Supernatural’s season 10 episode “About A Boy” sees Dean obsessed with finding a way to remove the Mark Of Cain from his arm. Sam eventually forces him to leave the bunker so they can investigate the disappearance of a man in Oregon. Dean being Dean, he heads to the same bar the man disappeared from and spends hours drinking with a woman called Tina. When she leaves Dean spots a scarred, creepy looking dude following her and he trails them. He confronts the scarred man and is blinded by a light from a hex bag tied around the man’s neck.

Dean then wakes up in a dingy basement cell and realizes he’s now fourteen. Tina (Madeleine Arthur, Color Out Of Space) is in the next cell alongside the man who vanished, and they’re also teenagers. The scarred man reappears and takes Tina’s cellmate, and it isn’t long until teen Dean weakens the bars around his cell window and escapes. Supernatural “About A Boy” naturally has a ball with teenage Dean, with actor Dylan Everett nailing Ackles’ body language and mannerisms. Sam is also quite taken aback seeing a mini-version of his brother, and when they have a lengthy chat about reliving the joys of puberty and fact teen Dean liked a Taylor Swift song, he confesses considering staying in his teen form since the Mark of Cain has vanished.

The Winchester’s head back to the house and confront the scarred man, who is revealed to be Hansel of Hansel and Gretel fame. He’s spent centuries working for the witch, who shrinks adults to their teen forms so she can eat them. Hansel agrees to help take down the witch who is prepping Tina for dinner, but the cackling witch reveals Hansel is on her side and ate his own sister, and he disarms the brothers. This leads to a vicious brawl where Dean turns himself back to adult form with the hex bag to kill Hansel, and then he pushes the witch into her own oven.

Supernatural “About A Boy” ends with teenage Tina deciding to stay young since she’s amassed three ex-husbands and lots of debt as a grown-up, so being a teenager offers a fresh start. Dean reveals the Mark has come back and the two drive off as a Taylor Swift song comes over the radio, with Sam shocked Dean isn’t turning it off.
