Supernatural’s Forgotten Spinoff Ghostfacers Explained (& Where To Find It)

Supernatural has failed to launch two spinoff shows, and has a prequel in the works, but many tend to forget its Ghostfacers spinoff web series. With the sprawling world Supernatural created over its 15-year run, and the dozens of memorable characters it featured, one would think coming up with a spinoff might be easy. That’s turned out not to be the case, at least with the ideas The CW came up with for Bloodlines and Wayward Sisters, even though the latter did have a good amount of fan support.

Before both of those came Ghostfacers, a web series that ran in 2010, based on the titular stars of a ghost-hunting reality show in the Supernatural universe. Led by Harry Spangler (Travis Wester) and Ed Zeddmore (AJ Buckley) – obvious but amusing references to Ghostbusters‘ Egon Spengler and Winston Zeddemore – the Ghostfacers mean well, most of the time, but are also often in over their heads on the occasions where they encounter actual spirits. Still, they did end up assisting Sam and Dean more than once.

The Ghostfacers spinoff ran for one season of 11 episodes, with each episode only running a few minutes in length. It’s a bit unclear how many people were actually streaming Ghostfacers, although one assumes it wasn’t a ton, since no season 2 happened. Still, the show contains lots of self-referential Supernatural humor, as well as lots of references to the broader horror genre, as fans would likely expect going in, and is notable for being the first attempt at a Supernatural spinoff.

In addition to Ed and Harry, the Ghostfacers web series team includes their cameraman and self-styled tech guy Kenny Spruce, Ed’s adopted sister Maggie, and two different interns that served as a replacement for original Ghostfacers intern Alan Corbett. Corbett was killed by the ghost of Freeman Daggett during a prior Supernatural episode, and Ed is having a difficult time dealing with his death. The first intern is a man named Dave, who Ed and Harry quickly dump in favor of Ambyr, who they find attractive. The team spends the series investigating a haunting at an old theatre by a dead starlet, played by Nip/Tuck‘s Kelly Carlson.

Only one other established Supernatural character appeared on the Ghostfacers web spinoff, that being Misha Collins’ Castiel, with Sam and Dean’s guardian angel showing up in a special bonus episode set outside the main story. Harry and Ed would go on to appear in later Supernatural episodes, although the Ghostfacers team officially disbanded.
