Warning: SPOILERS ahead for Superstore season 6, episode 15.

Superstore co-showrunner Jonathan Green has confirmed the one thing in the series finale that was always planned to happen, no matter when the show officially ended. The NBC workplace sitcom debuted back in 2015 and follows the misfit employees of ‘Cloud 9’, part of a fictional chain of hypermarket discount stores in St. Louis, Missouri. Superstore was cancelled after six seasons in December 2020 and aired its finale, “All Sales Final”, on March 25, 2021.

In anticipation of the finale, most fans were hoping for the show’s main romance to reignite as Jonah (Ben Feldman) and Amy (America Ferrera) were reunited. Ferrera’s departure from the show at the beginning of season 6 seemed like an abrupt end to Jonah and Amy’s romantic storyline when Amy left the Cloud 9 store to pursue a cooperative job in California. Ferrera didn’t expect to return to the show so soon after her departure but delighted fans when she announced she would play Amy again in order to give Superstore a proper send-off.

Then, the Superstore finale only proved to delight fans further by having Amy and Jonah get back together, as well as providing flashforwards that allowed fans to catch a glimpse into their future marriage and happy family life. In an interview with the Los Angeles Times, Green revealed it was always their plan to rekindle Amy and Jonah’s romantic relationship in the show’s finale, “whenever the series ended.” Read the full quote below:

“When America left, we figured that whenever the series ended, we wanted to try to get Amy and Jonah back together, if schedules permitted.”

The original creator and showrunner of Superstore, Justin Spitzer, also returned to the show to write the season finale. Discussing a pivotal conversation between Amy and Jonah in the episode, he elaborated on how the moment of their romantic reunion developed: “Their first conversation was a lot friendlier at first, but America felt like the way things ended with them was so intensely ugly that we owed them more than that and that it would feel like we were sweeping all that history under the rug if we didn’t.” As Jonah and Amy’s break-up divided fans of the show, it’s reassuring that the writers were dedicated to getting their romance back on track in a satisfying way.

Superstore fans will be relieved to know that Jonah and Amy’s reunion was always going to happen, as it was the only way to do their characters justice. By bringing them back together and showing fans their happy future, as well as providing happy endings for all its main characters, the finale of Superstore has successfully secured the show’s legacy in the workplace sitcom hall of fame. The finale’s success is particularly impressive considering the short amount of time to prepare after the show’s somewhat unexpected cancellation. By giving Jonah and Amy one last moment of beauty, Superstore has ensured that it will be remembered as a great, empathetic, and joyful comedy for a long time to come.
