Survival horror RPG Chernobylite has announced its PS5 and Xbox Series X/S release date, confirming a host of new-gen improvements and enhancements, and revealing the upgrade will be free for existing owners. Chernobylite features hyper-realistic horror environments, and is set in the Chernobyl Exclusion Zone, where players must confront both their past and the enemies lurking around every corner.

Originally released in summer 2021, Chernobylite has been widely praised for its story and gameplay. The title, from developer The Farm 51, was designed to be as faithful to the real-world Chernobyl as possible, with the team utilizing 3D scanning of Pripyat, Ukraine, and its surrounding areas to create a realistic in-game counterpart. With a non-linear story, RPG elements including crafting, and a blend of stealth and survival combat, the horror title relies on more than just its impressive environments. The game features a mixture of supernatural threats and an ominous military presence as players explore Chernobylite‘s dark and chilling world, aiming to solve its secrets.

Announcing the news on the official ChernobylGame website and on the ChernobylGame Twitter, The Farm 51 has confirmed Chernobylite will bring its horror to PS5 and Xbox Series X/S on April 21, the same date that the PC Enhanced Edition, the Blue Flames DLC, and a physical PS5 copy of the game will also be available. The developer has confirmed those who already own the original versions of the game will be eligible for a free new-gen upgrade, with the console update and PC Enhanced Edition set to “introduce ray tracing and will improve the game’s hyper-realistic visuals.” Players can expect to see two new graphics profiles: 4K (Dynamic) 30 fps and 1080p (Ultra Details) 60 fps. Those on PS5 will also see DualSense controller support. Meanwhile, the Blue Flames DLC is the first of four content drops set for 2022, and will offer “a free content update, a new weapon (the Silent Assassin crossbow), and a paid content pack.

The news of a free new-gen upgrade for existing owners of the game should please those looking to experience the enhancements promised for the next Chernobylite update. Before its full launch, Chernobylite was criticized for being too tame, and it’s possible that graphical improvements and new DLC could improve upon the base game, which already drastically improved from its time in Early Access. Chernobylite offers an impressive and immersive horror experience, but with new content drops and expansions, it could become even more popular with its players.

Chernobylite’s PS5 and Xbox Series X/S release targeting April is a smart move, as the game has been heavily compared to S.T.A.L.K.E.R, and could fill the void left by the recent delay and new release date for S.T.A.L.K.E.R 2. The highly-anticipated Xbox sequel was set to launch in April 2022 before being delayed to December, and Chernobylite might just be the perfect game for fans to delve in to as they wait for its release.
