Sweet Magnolias: How Jamie Lynn Spears’ Noreen Can Return In Season 2

Noreen Fitzgibbons could return in Sweet Magnolias season 2. Portrayed by Jamie Lynn Spears, the character seemingly exited Serenity for good after dumping Bill Townsend (Chris Klein). Before leaving, however, a key moment implies that Noreen’s storyline will continue moving forward. Sweet Magnolias season 1 ends with a big cliffhanger that appears to set up Noreen’s return.

Noreen is the reason why Bill leaves wife, Maddie (JoAnna Garcia Swisher ), which not only makes her the so-called “other woman” in Serenity, but also a villain according to Bill and Maddie’s eldest son, Ty (Carson Rowland). But Noreen proves to be a voice of reason, a woman who won’t put up with Bill’s manipulative and egocentric behavior. To young Kyle (Logan Allen), she’s even somewhat of a mentor, evidenced by her willingness to reach out to him in a time of need, and also to explain why she’ll no longer be around. The final two episodes of Sweet Magnolias season 1 heavily revolve around Kyle’s insecurities.

On prom night, a grounded Kyle hangs out with Nellie Lewis (Simone Lockhart), but their fun is interrupted when Serenity teenagers organize a house party. Kyle defends his brother, Ty, during a scuffle with a classmate, but then takes off in Ty’s vehicle and ends up crashing the car. The main trio, including Maddie, watch Kyle being pulled form the wreckage, unconscious, with the big reveal being that an unidentified passenger is still trapped. Noreen can’t be ruled out because it’s unclear how much time passes between Kyle’s house departure and the accident. If Noreen was the other passenger in the car, then she would likely return in Sweet Magnolias season 2 – if she survived the crash.

For Sweet Magnolias season 2, Noreen’s return would boost the conflict for several reasons. One, Noreen as the second passenger would complicate Bill’s return to Maddie. Two, Maddie always warns Ty not to let anyone but Townsends drive his vehicle. Three, Ty despises Noreen, and so he’d be even more distraught upon realizing that he didn’t protect his brother, and that he inadvertently broke Maddie’s rules.

If Noreen is revealed to be the second passenger in Sweet Magnolias season 2, then it’s more than possible that she’ll be used as an angelic figure. Noreen may be the guiding light that helps Kyle recover, albeit with a dark twist if she ends up passing away. This may not be the ideal way to bring back Spears’ character, but it would align with the series’ central themes about faith and redemption in the American South. If Noreen survives the accident with Kyle, then their bond would be even stronger, and thus complicate everything for Bill and Maddie. Either way, Noreen can be viewed as an angelic, protective figure in Serenity for Sweet Magnolias season 2.

Lastly, Noreen could return in Sweet Magnolias season 2 for a second shot at romance with Bill. After all, the series is about compassion and second chances; the collective group of characters separate themselves from the others but don’t necessarily give up entirely. It may be Noreen’s turn to re-think her decisions, and then reach out to Bill to discuss their issues. When Noreen was ready to leave Serenity, she was gone. And that understandable yet sudden decision may ultimately be the setup for her return in Sweet Magnolias season 2.
