Sword fighters have become a meme in the Super Smash Bros. Ultimate community. A number of the top-tier characters use swords, almost every Fire Emblem character uses a sword as their primary weapon, and the internet is filled with complaints that Smash has too many sword characters. However, there are a few video game characters who wield swords that Smash Bros. fans wouldn’t mind being added to the game.

With the recent announcement of Pyra and Mythra, Super Smash Bros. Ultimate now has 80 characters from dozens of franchises in its roster. Of course, Pyra and Mythra are sword-wielding characters, which adds more fuel to the “too many sword fighters” debate, but the roster as a whole is pretty diverse. Of the 80 total characters, there are roughly 20 sword fighters, which makes up about 25% of the roster. Another complaint the Smash community shares is that the majority of sword fighters come from the Fire Emblem games, and each of those fighters feels nearly identical to the others.

However, there is still room for more sword fighters, despite their already overbearing presence. There are untapped franchises that deserve to be in Smash Bros., as well as characters from already Smash-included franchises that just don’t have much representation. While they may wield a sword, these characters should be in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate.

More Sword Fighters For Smash Ultimate: Sora

Sora is a highly requested Smash character from the Kingdom Hearts series. Technically, his Keyblade is more of a metal rod than an actual sword, but it’s treated like a sword in many ways. His moveset would likely be unique enough that he wouldn’t feel like a normal sword fighter, and he would open the door for more Kingdom Hearts characters.

More Sword Fighters For Smash Ultimate: Lightning

Lightning is the main protagonist of Final Fantasy 13, and she plays a major role in Final Fantasy 13-2. These games aren’t the most beloved in the series, but Lightning is significant as the second female protagonist in the mainline Final Fantasy games, and she is well-designed, from her appearance to her folding sword. While Final Fantasy already has a small representation in Smash Bros., Lightning would make a great addition to the roster.

More Sword Fighters For Smash Ultimate: The Ashen One

Dark Souls 3’s Ashen One protagonist is a character that just makes sense to be in Super Smash Bros. They could access a diverse arsenal of weapons that pack a huge punch, but attacking would also leave them vulnerable, just like it does in DS3. The Ashen One would add another far-fetched franchise to the game, once again proving any character can make it into Smash. While the Ashen One would be a more traditional sword fighter, in the sense that they would rely heavily on their weapons, they would still likely receive a warm welcome from Smash fans.

More Sword Fighters For Smash Ultimate: Ryu Hayabusa

For having started on Nintendo consoles in 1988, it’s a little odd that Ninja Gaiden hasn’t appeared in Smash Bros. yet. Given Ninja Gaiden‘s upcoming Switch ports, now is the perfect time for protagonist Ryu Hayabusa to make his Smash debut, especially with Ultimate‘s addition of fellow NES side-scroller characters Simon and Richter Belmont from Castlevania. While there are plenty of sword fighters in Smash, there aren’t any ninjas with swords. Ryu may not be the most interesting of characters, but his rich history should have earned him a spot in Super Smash Bros. by now.

There are many other sword-wielding video game characters fans would like to see added to Smash Bros., but these four are particularly deserving of making it into one of the most ambitious fighting games of all time. With only two DLC fighter slots left at the time of writing, who knows if Super Smash Bros. Ultimate will get another sword fighter. Masahiro Sakurai may decide to mix things up and add Crash Bandicoot or reconsider his stance on Chibi-Robo.
