Darth Malgus is returning as the main villain in the next Star Wars: The Old Republic expansion, titled Legacy of the Sith, but what is he planning? Since the game’s release, the Sith Lord has repeatedly appeared as a SWTOR villain, but his motives have often changed. Though Darth Malgus began as a loyal Force wielder in the Sith Empire, his desire for power grew beyond the restraints of the Dark Council and the Emperor. His radical thoughts and desperation for evolution led to his defeat at the hands of Republic and Imperial collaborators in SWTOR’s The False Emperor Flashpoint. The character eventually returned in Star Wars: The Old Republic’s previous expansion, Onslaught, as Empress Acina’s Wrath; however, he soon defected to pursue his own goals.

Star Wars: The Old RepublicLegacy of the Sith begins on Manaan, with the armies of the Galactic Republic and Sith Empire fighting over the planet’s kolto resources. Frustrated with the constant neutrality of Manaan’s Slekath population, the Sith Lord known as Darth Norok launched an attack and established an underwater base to procure their own kolto supply. Meanwhile, Jedi like Arn Peralun and Tau Idair work alongside Republic players and the local militia to push the invasion forces back. While this conflict rages on, Darth Malgus begins making moves in the shadows. Players can hunt him down in the Elom Flashpoint, but his greater role in Legacy of the Sith’s story is unknown.

While current promotional materials for Legacy of the Sith hide Darth Malgus’ grand scheme, his previous plots and actions suggest the character’s motivations remain unchanged. Originally appearing in SWTOR’s Return trailer, which features the triumphant resurgence of the Sith Empire, Darth Malgus murders his Master and claims his position of power. Darth Malgus makes similar power moves during SWTOR’s Class Stories, where Imperial players can unwittingly assist in accomplishing his military goals. Strangely enough, Darth Malgus doesn’t work towards gaining a position in the Dark Council like most Sith. Instead, he seeks to become the next Emperor and betray the Sith Empire’s standard power ranking systems, destroying the Sith’s order. Unfortunately, players foil these plans in The False Emperor Flashpoint, where Darth Malgus is “killed.”

Darth Malgus Wants To Destroy SWTOR’s Galactic Republic And Sith Empire

Though Darth Malgus supposedly died during a SWTOR Flashpoint, he made a surprising return as Empress Acina’s Wrath in SWTOR’s previous expansion, Onslaught. After his return, Imperial players work more closely with the terrifying Sith Lord. Though Acina and other Sith featured in the Star Wars MMO assure players that Malgus remains on a tight leash, he continues working against the Empire and the Galactic Republic. Malgus’ plots likely remain similar to his first attempt to claim the title of Emperor, but recent promotional materials for Legacy of the Sith provide reasoning for his actions.

The Legacy of the Sith trailer shown at the end of SWTOR’s latest livestream contained a voiceover from Darth Malgus. The Star Wars universe often focuses on Sith and Jedi battling one another for dominance, with this feud raging throughout all known Star Wars eras. However, it seems Darth Malgus discovered the nonsensical, roundabout arguments were detrimental to both allegiances. Unfortunately, without enough power and military support, Darth Malgus has little chance of defeating the Sith Empire and the Galactic Republic. The Legacy of the Sith Elom location suggests Darth Malgus may be seeking the teachings of Darth Null to break the cycle.
