Syfy is preparing to debut a TV show reimagining of George A. Romero’s classic zombie sequel Day of the Dead; here’s what we know so far. Day of the Dead released in 1985, and for 20 years, was thought to be the third and final entry in Romero’s zombie movie saga. The final film was much smaller in scope than Romero had intended, as studios were only willing to fund his idea for a zombie epic if he agreed to make whatever cuts the MPAA deemed necessary to get an R-rating. Needless to say, Romero balked.

Even still, the Day of the Dead fans did get has eventually come to be seen by many horror lovers as an unheralded classic. After the super popular Dawn of the Dead, Day of the Dead‘s dour tone and claustrophobic setting turned off many, but after years spent on home video, Day of the Dead finally began to get its due as possibly another of Romero’s masterpieces.

Unfortunately, due to how some business dealings shook out, the Day of the Dead name ended up out of the control of Romero, and after his passing, Romero’s estate. There have been several awful Day of the Dead follow-ups made by the rights holders, but Syfy’s TV show hopes to buck that trend. Here’s what we know.

Day of the Dead TV Show Release Date & Trailer

Syfy has yet to reveal an exact release date for their Day of the Dead TV show, but they have confirmed the month it’ll premiere, October 2021, as shown in the trailer above. That’s a great choice, as October tends to be a month-long celebration of horror within pop culture anymore, having grown out of the Halloween holiday. Every past season of The Walking Dead has premiered in October for a reason, although this year TWD comes back in August, so Day of the Dead won’t need to compete directly, at least not much, with that zombie hit.

Day of the Dead TV Show Cast

Syfy’s Day of the Dead TV Show sports a rather large cast, which is appropriate considering the zombie apocalypse subject matter. The main players are Bates Motel vet Keenan Tracey, Daniel Doheny of Netflix’s upcoming Brand New Cherry Flavor, relative newcomers Natalie Malaika and Morgan Holmstrom, Kristy Dawn Dinsmore of Vikings, and Miranda Frigon, who’s appeared on tons of Canadian TV shows. This isn’t a big-budget show, and the lack of big names reflects that. Still, The Walking Dead cast mostly weren’t big names to start either.

Day of the Dead TV Show Story Details

Syfy’s Day of the Dead TV show follows a group of six survivors in the same town who come together after the dead rise. The entire 10-episode show takes place over the course of the first 24 hours of the outbreak, which contrasts with Romero’s late into the apocalypse film. Instead of a tense coexistence between scientists and soldiers underground, the Day of the Dead show will concern a town that’s divided along political lines. Most interestingly, merely shooting a zombie in the head won’t kill it anymore, as it’ll require full destruction of the head or body. A bite also won’t necessarily cause someone to turn into a zombie.
