Telecommunications company T-Mobile has created a range of 5G-themed alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages. The out-of-left-field novelty drinks serve as a self-congratulatory victory lap after T-Mobile met its 5G coverage goal earlier this year. After a year with some tough headlines for T-Mobile, the self-dubbed Un-carrier wants users to know that the company, while meeting its goals, also had a really bad time last year.

Of course, T-Mobile does run a merch shop, carrying items like branded cups and Hawaiian shirts, but this is the first time the company has sold consumable merchandise. The announcement comes after T-Mobile recently began providing home internet service and announced a partnership with Google to expand services on its network. But, it explains, “If the last year taught us anything, it’s that connectivity is critical … and, we could all use a drink.

T-Mobile 5G Drinks: How Did It Come To This?

These gins are also launching the day after T-Mobile put out a YouTube video featuring Neville Ray, President of Technology for T-Mobile, gallivanting around as “the most interesting man in wireless.” Clearly, the ad is aiming to parody the Dos Equis’ ad campaign, much like what T-Mobile did last year with the LG Velvet unboxing video. This feels like the weird inevitable conclusion to fast food restaurants serving alcohol at the drive-thru, or maybe this is the fault of everyone who let brands act like people during the last year. Of all the things people have been asking T-Mobile to do, it’s doubtful this was one of them.
