Tales of the Walking Dead will probably feature an episode centered on Skidmark the Cat, a character first introduced in The Walking Dead companion series, Fear the Walking Dead.  Earlier in September, when AMC announced the end of its flagship post-apocalyptic zombie action series The Walking Dead, it confirmed the development of Tales of the Walking Dead, an episodic anthology series showcasing standalone tales and backstories within The Walking Dead universe, in its press release. AMC confirmed that Tales of The Walking Dead will crossover with all three Robert Kirkman shows while keeping other significant details under wraps.

Skidmark is a cat that first appeared in Fear the Walking Dead season 5. Skidmark was found after the Gonzalez dam explosion by Daniel Salazar, who took him as a pet. After adopting Skidmark, Daniel moved along with him into his former owner’s garage where the cat helped Daniel deactivate the traps set up by his previous owner. In the series, Skidmark uses his stealth to distract the walkers, helping the main crew execute their tasks smoothly. While not much is known about Skidmark’s birth before the outbreak of the zombie apocalypse, the scenario is likely to change soon, as Tales of The Walking Dead might include an episode detailing Skidmark’s origins.

During the NYCC Fear the Walking Dead panel, executive producer Scott M. Gimple described his plans to include a Skidmark-centric episode in Tales of The Walking Dead. He revealed that while the anthology series will also contain animated episodes, the episode revolving around Skidmark will not necessarily have to be animated. Gimple also affirmed that The Walking Dead creators have seriously gone over the inclusion of Skidmark’s origin story in Tales of The Walking Dead.

“A Skidmark the cat episode does not necessarily need to be animated. We’ve talked, we’ve had lots of Milo and Otis style conversations for a while. We’ve had serious conversations about a deeper dive into Skidmark.”

Gimple had revealed earlier that Tales of The Walking Dead would also feature musical and animated episodes. According to Gimple, the episodes will not all have a thriller at their core, rather they will span over various genres. While some are straight horror stories, others may be dark comedy. At the moment, however, Gimple is not sure how the episode featuring Skidmark will look like, although he is enthusiastic about probing into the cat’s background. In Fear the Walking Dead season 5, Skidmark and Daniel got separated. But the cat will now appear in season 6.

Given that Tales of The Walking Dead is aimed at showcasing backstories and providing closure about unfinished arcs within The Walking Dead universe, an episode centered on Skidmark will help fans better understand the character’s origins within a post-apocalyptic world. Additionally, Gimple had mentioned that there are Milo and Otis style conversations happening about Skidmark, which is a possible reference to Skidmark’s connection with Rufus, a pet dog poised to appear in Fear the Walking Dead season 6. It is currently unclear if the animals are related, but viewers will not have to wait too long to know as Fear the Walking Dead season 6 premieres today.
