Taylor Swift has opened up about her eating disorder after she was criticized for being skinny.  Women all around the world struggle with the feeling of having to fit into a certain mold that the media portrays in perfect.

When Swift was only 14, she became the youngest artist to be signed to Sony records and signed her first record deal when she 15. She is best known for her biographical songs which have chronicled her life as a young girl starting out to some major breakups with Hollywood’s finest men such as John Mayer. Most recently, the singer announced she will have a documentary airing on Netflix in the New Year. The Grammy winner has been known to take it upon herself to stand up for the right of artists everywhere which has earned her even more praise amongst the industry and her fans.

As reported by Variety in her new Sundance documentary, Miss Americana, Swift bravely faced the cameras to speak out against body shaming. The documentary premiered on Thursday night at the film festival and will also be aired on Netflix. During the movie, there was a medley of negative comments that were directed at the singer, which included one that said the “Shake It Off” singer was “too skinny” and that it “bothered” the bully. The comments eventually took a toll on the singer and she announced that she had struggled in the past with an eating disorder.

The mainstream singer spoke during the documentary saying that it was never healthy to see pictures of herself on a daily basis. The camera showed a large number of paparazzi snapping photos everywhere she went. During the voice over, Swift said the eating disorder only happened a few times, but she was not proud that it happened. She shared the feeling that she felt when she would see a picture that she deemed made her look heavy and she would decide to starve herself of a short period of time.

The star mentioned she was not comfortable speaking out about her body image and how she equated food in the form of a reward or punishment. The relationship between stars and the media has been an ongoing tug of war with nothing seriously changing when it comes to the topic of body image. More powerful names need to stand up to Hollywood and say they are not going to accept this image of perfect. Only then will anyone see and feel a real difference.
