Ted Lasso season 2 teases that Rebecca and Ted are texting on a dating app, but are they really? The second season of Apple TV+’s hit comedy is nearly halfway over after airing episode 5, “Rainbow.” The rom-com inspired episode features plenty of plotlines, such as Roy Kent deciding to coach for AFC Richmond and Nathan building up his confidence. Another storyline that Ted Lasso season 2, episode 5 heavily revolves around is Rebecca’s pursuit of love.

Viewers met with Hannah Waddingham’s Rebecca in Ted Lasso season 1 when she was fresh off a messy divorce. While this included making her a villain for the first season, season 2 has her and Ted working side-by-side to bring AFC Richmond back to its rightful place in the Premier League. However, Ted Lasso season 2 has also focused on Rebecca’s pursuit to find love once again, with her briefly dating someone early in the season. Episode 5 shows that she is quite active on the dating app Bantr (which replaced Dubai Air as Richmond’s sponsor) that Keely Jones is helping, and that may have led to an accidental romantic interest in Ted Lasso.

SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY

Most of Rebecca’s time on the dating app is shown from her perspective and the messages she’s receiving from and sending to the anonymous person on the other end. Near the end of Ted Lasso season 2, episode 5, Rebecca tells the mystery person that she is at a football match but won’t reveal which team is her favorite. The show then quickly cuts to Ted walking through the building on his way to the game, smiling at his phone, and responding to a message he received. The show doesn’t revisit the Bantr conversation before the credits roll, leaving viewers in the dark about who Rebecca is texting. However, that cut to Ted heavily implies that he is her mystery man, and Ted Lasso is building towards a possible romance between AFC Richmond’s owner and coach.

A romance between Ted and Rebecca would make some sense for Ted Lasso season 2. Waddingham and Jason Sudeikis have excellent chemistry together on screen, and Ted and Rebecca truly enjoy each other’s company. Their recent Christmas festivities together were a great sign of that connection and could now be seen as Ted Lasso planting the seeds for this romance. They’ve also both helped the other get through divorces and understand the difficulty of putting themselves back out there in this fashion. Of course, if Ted and Rebecca are texting each other on the dating app, they currently have no idea that this is the case. The knowledge of who the other person is could change their outlook on this romantic potential. As good of a match as Rebecca and Ted might be, they could both be fearful of how it looks for AFC Richmond and how it could affect the team.

Ted Lasso season 2’s tease of a Ted and Rebecca romance could also be a giant piece of misdirection. This hint isn’t exactly subtle, so the mystery around Ted being the mystery guy won’t be a huge surprise to viewers, even if it is for the characters. There’s also the matter of Rebecca’s texting partner quoting poet Rainer Maria Rilke to her. Ted is a quote machine, but the poetic writings of Rilke aren’t usually the type of source material he pulls from. However, the show hasn’t really shown Ted’s romantic side yet, and love poetry isn’t exactly what would inspire AFC Richmond’s players in most instances. If Rebecca and Ted are texting on the dating app, it likely won’t be too long before Ted Lasso season 2 confirms this is the case.
