A behind-the-scenes video from the set of Ted Lasso season 2 reveals that star Hannah Waddingham really does have the spectacular voice she shows off in the show. Ted Lasso premiered on Apple TV+ in 2020 and is currently airing season 2, which will have its finale on October 8. The show follows an American football coach (Jason Sudeikis) who is brought on to help a British team of underdogs rise to the top. The show also stars Brendan Hunt, Stephen Manas, Phil Dunster, Juno Temple, and Brett Goldstein, despite a bizarre conspiracy theory that his character Roy Kent is CGI.

Waddingham plays Rebecca Welton, the woman who runs the British football team, AFC Richmond, and first hires Ted. Initially, Rebecca pulls strings to sabotage them in an attempt to get revenge on her ex-husband and former owner of the club. The show has long been teasing a possible romance between Rebecca and Ted as they gradually become friends. In season 2, episode 4, “Carol of the Bells,” the pair visit houses around London together, delivering Christmas presents to young children. Waddingham makes sure the episode lives up to its name by belting out the holiday standard “Christmas (Baby, Please Come Home),” originally sung by Darlene Love. Her voice is so startlingly powerful that many fans couldn’t believe it was actually her singing.

SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY

On Instagram, show creator Bill Lawrence shared a set video proving once and for all that Waddingham really is just that good. The video shows her rehearsing for the number, accompanied on the bass by her co-star Jeremy Swift. Apparently, this cast is far more musical than they let on. The playful caption reads, “For those who asked if that was really [Hannah Waddingham] singing. Wow. Her voice is okay, I guess.”

Waddingham has performed on Ted Lasso before, notably delivering an effortless rendition of Frozen‘s “Let It Go” in a karaoke scene in season 1. It is unsurprising that show has leaned on her for so many musical moments, since she has a long history in London’s musical theatre scene. The actress has performed in Spamalot, A Little Night MusicInto the Woods, the stage adaptation of The Wizard of Oz, and more. She also appeared in the film adaptation of Les Misérables.

Ted Lasso knows what it has with Waddingham and is intent on showing off her impressive range of talents as often as it can. Although some fans are having issues with what they believe to be a meandering season 2, as long as the show can harness the talents of its cast for everything they’re worth, it will always have something valuable to offer. Hopefully, Lawrence and his team will be able to channel these performances into the plot moving forward, and have something truly incredible for season 3.
