While it is widely believed that the Emmy Award-winning Apple TV+ series will end after season 3, Ted Lasso‘s Roy Kent actor, Brett Goldstein, wants more. Ted Lasso had another outstanding night at the 2022 Primetime Emmy Awards, taking home one of the ceremony’s top prizes, Outstanding Comedy Series, its second win in its first two seasons. Jason Sudeikis, who portrays the titular football coach, also took home his second straight award for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Comedy Series, as did Goldstein for Outstanding Supporting Actor, beating out his Ted Lasso co-stars Nick Mohammed and Toheeb Jimoh.

While Ted Lasso has achieved massive popularity and critical acclaim over the past two years, it is apparently nearing the end of its run. Sudeikis, along with his co-developers Bill Lawrence, Brendan Hunt, and Joe Kelly, initially created the show with a three-season plan in mind. Since season 2 ended, multiple cast members and producers have said they are acting under the assumption that Ted Lasso season 3 will be the end. Still, there are many who would not like to see the beloved series end after a relatively short run.

Speaking to the media room at the Emmys shortly after winning his award, Goldstein revealed he does not want to see Ted Lasso end so soon. The Roy Kent actor “would happily do [the show] for 20 years,” but he recognizes that the final decision ultimately lies with Sudeikis. Read what Goldstein shared below, via IndieWire:

The plan is entirely in Jason’s hands. I know all of us would happily do this for 20 years. And then say, “Maybe we need to wrap this up, because these footballers are all on crutches.” It’s entirely up to Jason. We’ve been writing this as if it’s the end, but it might not be. But I really don’t know.

While Goldstein says the future ofTed Lasso is ultimately up to Sudeikis, not even he has revealed any definitive plans. In fact, after winning his Emmy last night, Sudeikis said the chances of Ted Lasso season 4 are “up to more factors than [himself].” Because of this uncertainty, Goldstein and the other writers are approaching the upcoming third season as if it will the last. Therefore, expect Ted Lasso season 3 to provide heartfelt conclusions to various character arcs which began back in season 1.

If Ted Lasso continues into season 4, the show would likely follow a new story, as showrunner Bill Lawrence has indicated. With Goldstein game for many more seasons, perhaps Ted Lasso could morph into Roy Kent and shift its focus to the gruff but lovable midfielder turned assistant coach for AFC Richmond. Goldstein has written numerous episodes of Ted Lasso and could presumably take over creative control after season 3.
