Ted Lasso season 2 has hit a major twist in revealing that the mystery man who’s been flirting with Rebecca on the dating app Bantr is actually AFC Richmond player Sam Obisanya – a move that could fix a lot of the issues some fans have had with the season so far. Despite Ted Lasso’s popularity, many viewers have turned against the series in season 2, citing repetitive writing choices and a lack of conflict. But after the big dating app twist in Ted Lasso season 2, episode 6, those complaints may be getting addressed in a big way.

To be clear, despite the backlash against Ted Lasso season 2, many fans have remained loyal to the show, praising its nuanced character development and refreshingly optimistic energy. However, it’s undeniably true that season 2 has had notably less direct conflict than season 1 had, and that not much has really changed in the core character relationships. Ted Lasso plays largely with internal drama and more subtle arcs, but there’s no doubt that the show’s status quo could benefit from a bit of a shakeup.

Fortunately, that’s exactly what Ted Lasso season 2 has provided with the Sam/Rebecca twist. Their anonymous flirtation opens up a ton of possibilities that could lead to major intrigue for the whole AFC Richmond team. There’s clear chemistry between the two, but would they follow through with a relationship after discovering who they each are? It’s also possible the team could be submerged in a media scandal if Rebecca was caught flirting with one of her star players. Furthermore, how will she feel about dating a much younger man, given that her ex-husband Rupert was notorious for his relationships with much younger women?

There’s also the added wrinkle that Sam is the favorite player of Rebecca’s goddaughter, Nora. If she were to find out, Nora could encourage her godmother to go for it, but she could also recoil at the notion of Rebecca dating someone she herself may have a childhood crush on. The new dynamic between Sam and Rebecca is full of narrative opportunities, and it could be exactly the wrinkle some fans have been asking for.

Of course, a good portion of the Ted Lasso fan base is still pulling for a Ted/Rebecca relationship – something that was heavily teased before it was revealed that the mystery man was Sam and not Ted. The series is only halfway through season 2, and with all that’s happened so far, there could be plenty more twists and turns to come. Regardless of what happens, or doesn’t between Rebecca and Sam, it should make Ted Lasso season 2 a lot more interesting.
