Seth MacFarlane’s Ted is returning as Peacock gives a straight-to-series order for a live-action television adaptation of the hit movie. First hitting theaters in 2012, the film centered on Boston kid John Bennett who makes a wish for his teddy bear to come to life. His wish comes true and Ted becomes a nationwide sensation. However, nearly 30 years later, the world has moved on from its love of Ted and he and John must find a way to finally learn to grow up.

The cast for Ted included Mark Wahlberg as John and MacFarlane himself as the titular talking bear alongside Mila Kunis as John’s girlfriend, Lori, Joel McHale as Lori’s misogynist boss, Rex, Jessica Barth as Ted’s love interest, Tami-Lynn, and Giovanni Ribisi as Ted’s stalker, Donny. Directed by MacFarlane in his feature debut, the film received generally positive reviews from critics and was a box office smash, grossing nearly $550 million against its $65 million budget and spawning a less successful sequel. After over five years of absence from the screen, it appears the magical friend is ready to return.

Peacock has begun development on a series adaptation of Ted, per Deadline, with MacFarlane currently in talks to reprise the foul-mouthed bear and set to executive produce alongside Erica Huggins via the former’s Fuzzy Door production banner. Though the Family Guy creator is likely to return, especially as the project falls under his overall deal with Universal Content Productions, sources report that the series will likely not see Wahlberg or Kunis return to the fold. It also marks the second title MacFarlane has in the works at the streamer alongside the Bill Nye-hosted The End is Nye.

Though its follow-up didn’t bring in the same financial numbers as its predecessor, talks of a third Ted installment have circulated for the past five years, with MacFarlane confirming his own interest in returning as long as fans were on board. Given MacFarlane got his start in the world of television with Family Guy, the announcement of the first film came as a welcome surprise to some and its success showed he was capable of bringing his brand of humor to the big screen. Its sequel and A Million Ways to Die in the West did prove to be speed bumps for MacFarlane, which makes the shift for Ted’s return as a series all the more understandable.

With a large deal already in place at Universal Content Productions, MacFarlane is stacking his resume with a number of exciting projects across the company’s various platforms. For those who have been eager to see the return of a pot-smoking, foul-mouthed teddy bear, the announcement of a Ted series at a streaming platform will come as a happy one given it should be able to retain most of its R-rated sensibilities from the films. Though Wahlberg has a full schedule with Stu and Uncharted, one can only hope he finds a way to make some time to kick back and talk to a CGI bear.
