Teen Wolf: The Movie is officially a go, but Dylan O’Brien is among the original cast members not returning, with Tyler Hoechlin currently unsure. First airing on MTV back in 2011, Teen Wolf ran for six seasons before ultimately concluding in 2017. The show follows high school student Scott McCall (Tyler Posey) in the fictional California town of Beacon Hills, as he struggles to adapt to his new life after being bit by a werewolf.

As part of their large upcoming slate of movies and shows, Paramount+ announced recently that Teen Wolf: The Movie was moving forward and would release exclusively on their platform. The movie is to be written by Jeff Davis, the creator of the original series, and is said to find McCall, who is now an adult, faced with a dangerous new threat in his town of Beacon Hills. So far, the cast of Teen Wolf: The Movie is confirmed to include Posey, Crystal Reed, Holland Roden, Colton Haynes, Shelley Hennig, Linden Ashby, Orny Adams, JR Bourne, Seth Gilliam, Ryan Kelley, Melissa Ponzio, and Dylan Sprayberry.

While a number of original cast members are returning, a new report from Deadline confirms that O’Brien will not be reprising his role as Stiles Stilinski. It’s also currently unclear if Hoechlin, who played Derek Hale, will be joining the rest of the original cast in the new movie. This news comes after previous reports claiming that Arden Cho, who played Kira Yukimura, would not be returning due to being offered only a fraction of the salary offered to other former cast members.

In the years since Teen Wolf aired its final episode, O’Brien has arguably become the biggest star of any of the original cast. O’Brien has starred in the three Maze Runner films, in addition to American Assassin, Love and Monsters, and last summer’s Infinite. Hoechlin has also found success outside of Teen Wolf, continuing to appear as Superman in the Arrowverse TV shows, most recently in Superman & Lois. The new report doesn’t indicate why O’Brien is not returning or why Hoechlin is currently on the fence, but it could involve any number of reasons, including salary disputes, scheduling conflicts, or disagreements over the directions of the characters. Notably, Hoechlin was also absent from the last season of Teen Wolf, choosing to exit to pursue other projects.

Although news of O’Brien’s absence will likely come as a blow to longtime fans of Teen Wolf, the upcoming movie will feature the vast majority of the other original cast members. If Hoechlin returns as well, Teen Wolf: The Movie will see most of the core group of characters intact. It’s not entirely clear what the evil new force is that threatens Beacon Hills, but it certainly sounds like McCall will need all the help he can get. A release date for the upcoming Teen Wolf: The Movie has not yet been announced.
