In The Karate Kid Part III, Terry Silver (Thomas Ian Griffith) had a convoluted, evil scheme to destroy Daniel LaRusso (Ralph Macchio). After beating Johnny (William Zabka) and Chozen (Yuji Okumoto) in the first two Karate Kid movies, Daniel faced his most menacing antagonist yet when Silver came to the Valley. Silver posed a challenge to Daniel that was quite unlike the battles he had with his previous villains.

Daniel’s life was complicated by the presence of three villains in The Karate Kid Part III. Despite just being an ordinary teenager, Daniel found himself the target of three formidable martial artists, and it was all because of his victory over Johnny in the first movie. By winning the tournament and disgracing the Cobra Kai dojo, Daniel and Mr. Miyagi (Pat Morita) unwittingly ignited a conflict with Kreese (Martin Kove) and Silver, who allied with professional fighter Mike Barnes (Sean Kanan) to cause problems for Daniel and his sensei. As a result of their scheming, Daniel briefly trained with Silver and had a falling-out with Mr. Miyagi. But in the end, Daniel overcame Barnes in a one-on-one showdown in his second All Valley Karate Tournament.

SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY

Daniel’s battle with Barnes and the pain he suffered throughout The Karate Kid Part III can all be attributed to the meticulous planning of Silver, who used his financial resources to accomplish his goals. Primarily, there were two things that Silver wanted, which were to redeem the Cobra Kai name and get revenge on Daniel and Mr. Miyagi for humiliating Kreese. To succeed in both, Silver understood that he needed Daniel to lose the next tournament. To that end, he hired Barnes to bully Daniel into competing. Daniel’s anger over Barnes created issues between him and Mr. Miyagi, who didn’t want him to give in to Barnes’ demands. This played into Silver’s hands, as it gave him an opportunity to train Daniel, and thus step up the emotional torture.

Silver intentionally made life hard for Daniel with his unnecessarily brutal training methods. He also tried to make Daniel embrace the cruelty of Cobra Kai, knowing that if this happened, he’d drive a wedge between him and Mr. Miyagi. What caused him to fail was Daniel’s inherent goodness and Mr. Miyagi’s influence. When Daniel decided against competing, Silver dropped the ruse but didn’t abandon his revenge plan or bullying tactics. After pushing Daniel to compete, Silver had Barnes attempt to beat Daniel slowly in an effort to maximize and prolong his pain However, this phase of the plan collapsed as well, thanks to Daniel’s superior skills in the tournament’s final round.

Silver believed that a victory for Barnes would restore Cobra Kai’s image and allow it to reach new heights, but his actions in The Karate Kid Part III showed that his business interests and devotion to the principles of Cobra Kai took a backseat to a much stronger emotion – hate. His hatred for Daniel and Mr. Miyagi sent him down a dark and violent path and is what ultimately defined his entire plan. It’s for this reason that Terry Silver’s return in Cobra Kai season 4 has such ominous implications for the main characters.
