Tesla collaborated with PUBG Mobile for its recent 1.5 update, making the game’s fictional island of Erangel the destination for a new Tesla factory. The partnership isn’t too out of left field, seeing as PUBG Mobile is one of the most popular games around the world and Tesla is becoming increasingly involved in the gaming industry.

PUBG Mobile first launched in 2018, a year after its initial PC version PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds was released. PUBG‘s mobile version surpassed one billion downloads worldwide just three years after it went live, and is now one of just five mobile games that made over $1 billion in 2020. The free-to-play franchise is considered to be one of the founders of the battle royale genre, which has reached great heights in popularity with additional releases like Fortnite. Considering PUBG Mobile’s massive reach and global audience, many corporations would understandably jump at the opportunity to integrate its brand’s products into the gameplay.

SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY

In light of the 1.5 update, PUBG Mobile posted a 30-second video to its YouTube channel that gives viewers a look into the Tesla collaboration. The trailer shows off the game’s selection of Tesla vehicles, such as the Roadster. In the PUBG Tesla Gigafactory, players can assemble and drive off in their desired Tesla model. The cars produced at the factory are reportedly self-driving and can take players to different locations throughout Erangel. Additionally, players traversing the island might encounter Tesla semi trucks, which yield a variety of supplies if dealt damage to.

The collaboration with Tesla is not the first cross-promotional feature seen in PUBG Mobile. This past September, PUBG Mobile integrated Mountain Dew vending machines into the game in a limited-time event, challenging players to collect Mountain Dew cans that they could later trade-in for battle points or special items. Similarly, Tesla is no stranger to the gaming industry. Recent Tesla models include the Tesla Arcade gaming feature, which – specifically in the Model S – is equipped with 10 teraflops of processing power. Tesla Arcade on the Model S is so powerful, in fact, that company CEO Elon Musk boasted that it can run Cyberpunk 2077.

It is questionable whether the additional Tesla elements will improve PUBG Mobile’s gameplay, but the collaboration could be one of a series of future partnerships with outside brands. Fortnite has already proven that creative collaborations with brands like Marvel or the NFL help keep players invested amid a constantly changing pop culture landscape – something PUBG Mobile has room to do more of. If the integration of Tesla’s products into PUBG Mobile is positively received by the billion players around the world, then fans will probably see more cross-promotional events with other brands in the future.

PUBG Mobile is available now on iOS and Android.
