Having announced plans to accept Dogecoin for merch back in December, Tesla is now coming good with its promise and has started accepting the meme coin for some of the merchandise on its website. Tesla founder and CEO Elon Musk has long been a proponent of cryptocurrencies, and Dogecoin has been one of his favorites. Musk has been known to shill for Doge time and again over the past year, so it’s no surprise that it’s the crypto Tesla has chosen to accept as a mode of payment — albeit, only for merch and not for its cars.

Tesla last year announced that it would accept Bitcoin payments for its vehicles, only to retract that stance less than two months later. Musk put the decision down to the heavy use of fossil fuels for Bitcoin mining, although the company reportedly continues to hold billions of dollars worth of Bitcoin. Since then, Musk has openly talked about his unfavorable disposition towards Bitcoin in no certain terms while speaking highly of Doge. It is only natural then that Dogecoin will be the first crypto to be accepted by Tesla for its merchandise.

In a Tweet earlier today, Elon Musk announced that Tesla has started accepting Dogecoin for select merchandise items. Indeed, Doge payments are now live on Tesla’s website, where some of the items have Dogecoin listed as a mode of payment. One of the most expensive items on sale for Doge is the Cyberquad for Kids that is listed at 12,020 Doge, although it was out of stock when checked. Some of the other items that have a Doge pricing include the Giga Texas Belt Buckle for 835 Doge (around $160) and the Cyberwhistle for 300 Doge (around $58).

Dogecoin Option Is Only Available For Select Items

Interestingly, Doge seems to be the only way to buy the aforementioned items as there’s no listed dollar price for them when checked. That is different from most of the other items listed on the website, including apparel, chargers, coffee mugs, and model Teslas, which only have a dollar price with no mention of Doge. This suggests that the company is not accepting Doge payments for those items at this point in time.

Following Elon Musk’s Tweet, the price of Dogecoin soared 15 percent on Friday, rising to 20¢ when last checked on Coinbase. Like most other leading cryptocurrencies, Doge has also been on an upward swing over the past year and has jumped almost 2,000 percent in the past twelve months. It is still significantly below its peak of 74¢ that it hit last May. With patronage from companies like Tesla, it’ll be interesting to see if Doge will increase further in value in the coming weeks and months.
