Netflix unveils the Texas Chainsaw Massacre trailer, offering the first look at old Leatherface as he continues his reign of bloody terror. The horror film serves as a sequel to the original 1974 slasher classic and centers on young moneymaker Melody as she moves to a remote town in the titular Southern state with her teenage sister and friends in an effort to open a new business in a small town, only to accidentally disrupt Leatherface’s home and draw his ire. As he targets the group, local resident Sally Hardesty elects to come out of hiding in an effort to get revenge for the massacre that started it all.

SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY

Sarah Yarkin leads the cast of Texas Chainsaw Massacre alongside Elsie Fisher, Mark Burnham as Leatherface, Jacob Latimore, Moe Dunford and Olwen Fouéré as Sally Hardesty, taking over the role from original actress Marilyn Burns following her death in 2014. Development on the film has taken a rocky path over the past few years, with Lionsgate’s five-movie plans after 2017’s Leatherface being scrapped after they lost the rights to the franchise and Legendary Pictures later acquiring them, only for directors Ryan and Andy Tohill to be fired by the studio within a week of shooting and replaced by David Blue Garcia. With Netflix having picked up Texas Chainsaw Massacre in mid-2021, the streamer is looking to build anticipation for the horror sequel.

With only a couple of weeks left until its arrival, Netflix has revealed the first Texas Chainsaw Massacre trailer. The video offers the first look at Leatherface’s bloody return to the screen as he sets his sights on a new, modern day group of victims. Check out the video below:

The official Texas Chainsaw Massacre trailer offers an exciting look at the horror sequel for fans of the long-running franchise, promising more gory thrills from Leatherface in his first proper appearance in nearly a decade since 2013’s direct sequel Texas Chainsaw. In addition to the iconic horror villain, the trailer offers a proper look at the return of Sally Hardesty, the final girl of the original Texas Chainsaw Massacre who was originally killed off-screen in the opening narration for Leatherface: The Texas Chainsaw Massacre III before being brought back with a non-speaking cameo appearance for 1995’s The Next Generation. Due to the passing of original actress Burns in 2014, Olwen Fouéré is taking over the role of Sally and the characterization seen in the trailer may seem familiar to genre fans.

Sally’s appearance in the Texas Chainsaw Massacre seems to be taking a page out of David Gordon Green’s Halloween book, in which he took Jamie Lee Curtis’ original final girl Laurie Strode and turned her into an action heroine hunting down Michael Myers. Much like the other recent slasher sequel, the new Texas Chainsaw Massacre looks to be updating its story with a modern-day setting with its inclusion of newer technology and poking fun at social media and cancel culture. Only time will tell if the film can reach the same critical heights as Halloween when Texas Chainsaw Massacre hits Netflix on February 18.
