Marvel director Chloe Zhao reveals Thanos’ home planet Titan had 10 Eternals just like Earth did. Perhaps more so than any other MCU project yet, Zhao’s Eternals dives deep into the universe’s history. Thousands of years before Steve Rogers picked up a shield and Tony Stark built an iron suit, the Eternals arrived on Earth with one goal: To protect humanity from the evil Deviants. As the human race developed around them, the Eternals retreated into the shadows until the present day, when a renewed threat pulls them back together.

Eternals covers a broad swath of MCU history, yet somehow contains few references to the broader universe. Characters allude to Iron Man and the Blip, but for the most part, Eternals is its own story. That is, until the end-credits scenes. In addition to hinting at a bigger future for Dane Whitman (Kit Harington) that could tie into the upcoming Blade movie, the credits introduce Eros (Harry Styles), Thanos’ brother. Even now, well after his demise in Avengers: Endgame, Thanos still looms large in the MCU, and fans are still learning more about where he came from.

Zhao recently sat down for a spoiler-filled interview with Empire, where she shared several new details about her Marvel film. On the subject of Eros, Zhao revealed she created an entire backstory for him that doesn’t even get touched upon in the film, and it involves Thanos’ home planet Titan. Similar to how there were 10 Eternals sent to Earth, the same happened to Titan in Zhao’s backstory. She said:

He’s [Eros] an Eternal, and he was stationed on Titan – 10 of them were, just like the 10 Eternals on Earth, assuming Titan is also a host planet at some point. Now, if you think about that, what influence could Eros have had on the inhabitants of Titan, the way Ajak has influenced people on Earth? And how that has affected Thanos?

As Avengers: Infinity War revealed, Thanos’ villainous turn was largely due to the destruction of Titan. He described it as being caused by a lack of resources, but Zhao’s explanation also suggests the planet was a host for a newborn Celestial, which would also be a cataclysmic event. That would retcon MCU history, though it isn’t necessarily canon just because Zhao envisioned it this way. If anything, this demonstrates Eternals led Zhao to put real thought into how these characters impacted and fit into MCU history.

According to Zhao’s Eros backstory, the character also known as Starfox defected from his position on Titan and has been on the run for years. Presumably, his history will be touched upon in future Eternals movies, though nothing has been confirmed just yet. Still, Eros has a rich past, and it’s clear the Eternals race as a whole has touched many parts of the MCU. That could lead to some compelling stories further down the line, and it’ll be interesting to see how it all unfolds.
