On the surface, Thanos and Apocalypse have a lot in common. They’re both big, colorful, old, and willing to cause untold destruction in order to reshape the world how they see fit. But the question still remains: if the two of them were to turn their sights on each other, who would ultimately prove themselves to be the strongest? Apocalypse and Thanos have both been formidable villains in the Marvel Universe for millennia, holding their own against gods and heroes alike. They are known for their enormous size and seemingly limitless strength, as well as their use of alien technology to aid them in their conquests. The two behemoths have unique visions of how the universe should be and are willing to crush anybody who stands in their way to achieve their goals.

Born in ancient Egypt as En Sabah Nur, Apocalypse is believed to be the world’s first mutant and is definitely one of its most powerful. He is fiercely intelligent and determined and possesses several dangerous powers including super strength and the ability to manipulate his molecules to change his size and mass. He has also enhanced himself with Celestial technology that has given him an arsenal of other powers.

Thanos was born on the moon of Titan and belongs to the ancient race of Eternals. Though he was initially a pacifist in his younger years, he eventually changed his ways and embraced nihilism and death. Thanos also has a vast range of powers including super strength, invulnerability, immortality, telepathy, and the control of cosmic energy. His power is often enhanced when he possesses the Infinity Gauntlet, which he has sought numerous times throughout his life.

Both Thanos and Apocalypse are extraordinarily determined and have lofty goals they will go to any end to accomplish. Apocalypse believes in a world where only the strongest and the fittest survive and has sought to impose this worldview throughout his battles against the X-Men. There are several timelines in which he makes this vision a reality, including the Age of Apocalypse storyline and the far-flung future where Cable grew up. In almost all cases, however, he is ultimately defeated by a resistance led by equally determined mutant heroes.

Thanos is known as the Mad Titan and has a much more personal ambition that drives him: he is in love with Death herself and will stop at nothing to impress her. His reason for seeking the Infinity Stones and killing half the beings in the universe is to make her fall in love with him. But no matter how much death and destruction he causes, he can never seem to win her affection. Both Thanos and Apocalypse have faced off against the strongest heroes and mutants the Marvel Universe has to offer. Even without the aid of the Infinity Gauntlet, Thanos has held his own against Galactus, the Hulk, Thor, and Odin. Apocalypse on the other hand has fought nearly every team of X-Men that has been assembled and has proven himself to be one of their greatest foes.

When it comes down to it, perhaps the biggest determiner of the fight would be who has the strongest will. Even though Thanos can be unstoppable in his quests, it is often in the service of his love of Death. It’s hard to tell whether he would be so determined without that motivation. In fact, Thanos often gets in the way of his own success. Apocalypse, on the other hand, has a level of fortitude that is almost unmatched in the Marvel Universe. In the recent X of Swords crossover, he showed that he was willing to fight his long lost wife to the death, and his willpower was able to crush that of the ancient god Annihilation. In a fight against Thanos, it is likely Apocalypse would use all of his might and drive and ultimately show he is the strongest.
