Kitty Forman (Debra Jo Rupp) received a faithful companion in the form of a cute dog during That ’70s Show, but the pet had a tendency to disappear. Schatzi, the small brown Dachshund, instantly won over Kitty’s heart — but the same couldn’t be said about the rest of her family, particularly her husband, Red (Kurtwood Smith). Here’s what happened to the adorable pooch and the likely scenario surrounding its absence.

Toward the beginning of That ’70s Show season 5, Kitty thought that she might be pregnant. The news was a bit of a shock, but she was eventually elated at the notion of expanding her family. Those hopes were quickly dashed when Kitty learned she wasn’t pregnant, but instead, going through menopause. Red didn’t know how to navigate his wife’s sudden mood swings, so to cheer her up, he got her a dog. Kitty treated Schatzi like a king, which was appropriate since the name means “sweetheart” in German.

Shortly after Schatzi’s introduction in the sitcom, the dog wasn’t shown despite the fact that the Forman’s house was a primary setting. It wasn’t until season 7 in the episode “It’s Only Rock and Roll” did Schatzi make another appearance. As a way to explain the pet’s absence, Red claimed that Schatzi had been hiding under the house, insinuating that he forced him out with the garden hose. Later in the episode, Kitty took up Tai Chi, but Schatzi wouldn’t stop barking during her lessons. Her son, Eric (Topher Grace), then appeared and leaned against a short wall where he accidentally knocked over a Buddha statue. The statue fell on the dog, which finally put an end to the barking. There was a popular belief that Eric killed Schatzi but thankfully that wasn’t the case.

Eric Didn’t Kill Schatzi During That ’70s Show Season 7

The credits scene, also referred to as the “tag scene” in the entertainment world, revealed that Schatzi was alive and well following the Buddha accident. The sequence featured main characters partaking in a “circle” and the cute Dachshund was in attendance wearing a little bandage on his head. Eric may have given him a bump on the head, but the dog didn’t seem to suffer any serious injuries. It was possible though that the dog stopped with his nonstop barking.

Following this incident, Schatzi was never seen or mentioned again in That ’70s Show. There wasn’t any type of explanation given to reveal the reasoning behind the dog’s exit. More than likely, it was too complicated including an animal on set since it required so many extra protocols. The series was primarily filmed in front of a live audience, so having a pet in the plot furth complicated matters. Viewers could assume that Schatzi lived a happy and full life off-screen or he went back under the house to avoid future Buddha accidents.
