10 Kaguya-sama: Love is War

Kaguya-sama is a 12-episode anime that was released in 2019, with a second season following the next year. Student council president Miyuki Shirogane and vice president Kaguya Shinomiya give the impression that they’re in a perfect relationship.

They are both well-connected students, and though they like each other, both are too prideful to confess their love to the other. The series spans through school as both try to make the other confess their feelings.

9 My Hero Academia

My Hero Academia features a world where people have superpowers, or quirks, as they’re labeled. Izuku Midoriya dreams of being a hero despite not having a quirk. He and a friend meet a hero they admire, All Might, who decides to pass on his quirk to Izuku after witnessing his determination.

Izuku thus moves to U.A. High School to begin his journey as a hero. Meanwhile, another group plots how to destroy the heroes, as well as current society.

8 Death Note

Death Note is a 2006 anime, adapted from a 2003 manga of the same name. Centered around a genius teenager named Light Yagami and a notebook that can kill, Death Note has proven surprisingly popular, garnering several adaptations, including one to Netflix in 2017.

Essentially, it is a game of cat and mouse between two geniuses, one of whom is on the side of justice and one of whom is not.

7 Attack on Titan

Attack on Titan features a world where Titans, who attack and eat humans on sight, have forced humans to live in a small country with massive walls surrounding them.

After an attack on their major city by the Titans, Erin Yeager’s mother is killed, and he joins the army in response. His childhood friend and his foster sister join him. After completing their training, they are stationed at the city of Trost to fight the Titans who might attack.

6 Sailor Moon

Sailor Moon follows a schoolgirl named Usagi Tsukino. Leading a group of friends, she searches for the Legendary Silver Crystal and prevents the destruction of the solar system.

To do all this, Usagi transforms into Sailor Moon, a soldier who protects Earth from the forces of evil by using a magical brooch. Together, she and her comrades fight off villains. There are two anime adaptations of Sailor Moon.

5 Black Clover

The anime of Black Clover premiered in 2017. Asta and Yuno are orphans and were raised at an orphanage. Most people are born with magical powers, including Yuo, but Asta is born without any magic whatsoever.

Asta tries to obtain magic through physical training. He ends up developing a friendly rivalry with Yuno, who is a prodigy. They both find magical clovers, and hope to use them to become the next Wizard King, a powerful position.

4 Tokyo Ghoul

Ghouls, in this series, live hidden among people and must eat human flesh to survive. Ken Kaneki is a college student whose date Rize attacks him, revealing herself to be a ghoul. After recovering, Ken discovers that due to a surgery that transferred some of Rize’s organs to him, he is now part-ghoul.

Ghouls who run a coffee shop take him in and teach him how to be a part-ghoul. Meanwhile, he tries to hide his new identity from his friends in this anime.

3 Sword Art Online

The anime of Sword Art Online was first released in 2012 and has received massive success. A few years in the future, an online role-playing game is released called Sword Art Online. Thousands of players log in for the first time only to be told by the game’s creator that they must play to the end to be released. If they fail and die in-game, they will suffer real deaths.

A gamer who beta-tested the game, Kazuto Kirigaya, decides to play alone. However, he teams up with a young woman named Asuna, and they hunt down the game’s creator, who is also playing.

2 Psycho-Pass

In the future, Japan is assisted by the Sybil System, which evaluates everyone for certain factors such as criminality. Akane is a new inspector in the criminal investigation department.

The unit begins hunting a man whose criminal coefficient is low, ensuring that they do not bother him. However, his actions oppose his number, making him criminally asymptomatic and thus a threat. The anime series debuted in 2012.

1 Darling in the Franxx

Darling in the Franxx is set in a futuristic world where children have become undesirable, though adults live forever. Therefore, artificial children are created, called parasites, and assist in piloting giant mechas called franxx.

One parasite who doesn’t get along with his piloting partner, Hiro, decides to pair with a girl who has a reputation for killing off her partners. The series was released in 2018.
