10 Get Out – 7.7

A young African-American man heads over to meet the family of his Caucasian girlfriend, but is horrified to learn of the secret activities they engage in, and he realizes he needs to escape as fast as he can.

Being the film that elevated Jordan Peele into the big leagues and won him an Oscar award, Get Out was lauded for simultaneously delivering a unique take in the horror genre while tackling the issue of racism. Its success also led to Peele’s follow-up release in Us.

9 Loving Vincent – 7.8

The life of Vincent van Gogh is detailed in its tragic glory as the circumstances behind his death give his living days shape and form. As we learn more concerning what transpired, so do Vincent van Gogh’s deep struggles seem as real to us as they were to him.

Being a thoroughly original take in film direction, Loving Vincent was hailed as a breakthrough for having the movie play out completely in painted form. The narrative style was that of a painting being created on a canvas, making Loving Vincent a beautiful watch.

8 Paddington 2 – 7.8

Being the most critically acclaimed film of all time on Rotten Tomatoes, it’s not a surprise that Paddington 2 also ended up high in IMDb ratings as well. It’s a cute family picture that has loads of heart involved.

7 Call Me By Your Name – 7.9

In 1983, a growing friendship between two young guys turns into a romantic involvement, although neither of them truly accepts their feelings. Once they do acknowledge their longing for one another, things appear to veer out of their control.

Unlike many other LGBT themed films, Call Me By Your Name didn’t spend too much time on having the leads worrying about what others might think of them; rather, by focusing on their personal insecurities, the film was able to craft a tale of self-reflection and acceptance.

6 Dunkirk – 7.9

Surrounded by enemies and far from home, Allied soldiers have to fight for their lives while beating a harried retreat during the great Dunkirk evacuation – an iconic event of the second World War that is firmly entrenched in history.

Being one of the many notable directorial efforts of Christopher Nolan, Dunkirk was a hit with the critics due to its execution of intense war sequences and its lack of reliance on dialogue. Treading respectfully over a sensitive subject was another reason why Dunkirk met with success.

5 Thor: Ragnarok – 7.9

Thor is warned of the arrival of his evil sister Hela, who overthrows him to become Queen of Asgard. Down and beaten, Thor comes across the Hulk on a gladiatorial planet, and he leads an escape back to reclaim his throne.

We might be speculating Thor’s future these days, but his third solo film remains evergreen for changing up his character and bringing forward a hilarious journey filled with action set pieces. Audiences certainly seemed to have come back for several more viewings.

4 Blade Runner 2049 – 8.0

When a replicant Blade Runner comes across a secret ploy in the works, he heads out on an adventure where he meets the original film’s protagonist, prompting even more revelations concerning the inner workings of this dark, dystopian future.

Its long, slow pace ended up working its benefit, as Blade Runner 2049 was noted for being one of the best neo-noir offerings ever made. Its deeply imaginative and artistic merits, beautifully tragic themes, and epic scale come together to truly create one of the most thought provoking ventures to ever be made.

3 Logan – 8.1

In a dystopian future, the once heroic X-Men have all died out over the years, leaving James Logan, or Wolverine, and Professor Charles Xavier among the very few remaining mutants. In their final adventure, they must escape execution while protecting a young mutant girl.

Goodbyes are always difficult, and it was particularly sad to bid Wolverine farewell as the X-Men series lost its most popular character. With a story that was built to be heartbreaking, Logan couldn’t have been a better last hurrah for such a long running series.

2 Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri – 8.2

After the death of her daughter doesn’t receive the justice it deserves, a woman rents out three billboards in order to bring the matter to local consciousness. However, she then begins taking a real stand by going after those who she feels were to blame.

It wasn’t the tear inducing affair people confused it to be, as Three Billboards turned out to be both about an empowering stand as well as a dark take on the consequences of taking matters into one’s own hands. Being comedic in places led to the film being a complete package for a viewing experience.

1 Coco – 8.4

A boy’s dreams of pursuing his love for music are seemingly dashed, but his venture into the land of the dead gives him hope that his grandfather’s blessing might remove this ban on music and allow him to chase what he wants.

Coco continued Pixar Studios’ track record of having its original films carry a significant message that always leaves a majority of viewers in tears. The music was top notch, to the point where it took a life of its own as the screen dazzled viewers every time a sequence started. Fans loved the heartwarming sentiments behind the film, both older and younger viewers alike.
