8 Newsies: The Broadway Musical

Newsies was a 1992 musical-comedy film that was adapted for the stage in 2011 before making its Broadway debut in 2012. The story is inspired by the Newsboy Strike of 1899 that occurred in New York City.

After a successful Broadway run and national tour, Disney decided to record a live performance of Newsies much as they did with Hamilton. The film was filmed at the Pantages Theater in Los Angeles with some of the original Broadway actors reprising their roles for the film.

5 Les Misérables

One of the most popular and iconic historical novels, Les Misérables, was adapted for the stage in the 1980s and then in 2012 was adapted for the screen.

The musical film starred a hugely talented cast including Hugh Jackman, Russell Crowe, Anne Hathaway, and Amanda Seyfried. Just like the novel and stage musical, the film takes place in France and follows Jean Valjean, a former prisoner, who finds himself entrusted to raise Cosette after her mother’s untimely death. 4 Hamilton: History Has Its Eyes On You

The newest Hamilton special was created to serve as a companion to the Hamilton live film. Filmed in the world of COVID-19, the special features the stars of the original Broadway cast, including Lin-Manuel Miranda, in their own homes as they reflect on their time in the groundbreaking musical. The special is hosted by Good Morning America’s Robin Roberts and even features interviews with director Thomas Kail and Annette Gordon-Reed, Harvard professor and historian.

In addition to giving fans the inside scoop on the casts’ time on Broadway, the special also aims to open a conversation about what the musical means in today’s age of politics.

3 Rent

There are many ways to watch Rent nowadays. In fact, Rent became the first-ever musical to have been filmed live and distributed in movie theaters in North America when Rent: Filmed Live on Broadway hit theaters in 2008. One of the most iconic Broadway musicals to be turned into a film is none other than West Side Story. Inspired by one of Shakespeare’s greatest plays, Romeo and Juliet, West Side Story follows two star-crossed lovers as they try to defy their rival gangs to be together.
