2022 is a massive year for the fantasy genre, with the return of both the Game of Thrones and The Lord of the Rings universes on the small screen, as well as tons of major science fiction/fantasy films hitting the box office.

The fantasy shows debuting this year range from those centered around sci-fi and superheroes to video game adaptations and more. The time to catch up is now, since beginning in March, there will be a new hit series popping up nearly every month for the entire year.

Avatar: The Last Airbender Live-Action Series – No Release Date As Of Yet

The immensely popular cartoon, Avatar: The Last Airbender is currently filming its live-action Netflix series. There’s no guarantee that this will be released in 2022, but given the schedule that it’s maintaining, it seems highly likely.

The show will feature a mostly young cast and is set to right the wrongs of the film adaptation from 2010. Hopefully, the show succeeds in doing so and finds a way to bring a new look to the beloved franchise.

The Sandman – No Release Date As Of Yet

This won’t be the first Neil Gaiman-based show to make it to the small screen in recent years but will be the first on Netflix, with Lucifer, American Gods and Good Omens also being adaptations of his characters.

The Sandman was announced and already has a trailer released, but still no release date. The series features a diverse cast of talented actors, including Charles Dance, David Thewlis, and Jenna Coleman.

Foundation Season 2 – No Release Date As Of yet

The first season of Isaac Asimov’s legendary sci-fi book adaptation was a success in terms of viewership, allowing it to be renewed for a second season. While the show has some flaws to patch up, the visual effects, cast, and world-building were enough to earn the series a fan base.

Foundation stars Jared Harris and Lee Pace, both of whom excel in the roles. The fascinating sci-fi universe is similar to Dune and Star Wars, with common subject matter of rebellion and imperialism.

Stranger Things Season 4 – May 27, 2022 & July 1st, 2022

Stranger Things is a massive hit and is certainly the crowning jewel of Netflix’s original series catalog. The show will return for its fourth installment in 2022, which will debut in two parts throughout the summer.

Netflix announced that the show will be concluded in its fifth season. Fans are incredibly excited for the next installment of the science fiction/fantasy series, which is known for having one of the most shocking opening scenes in TV history.

The Boys Season 3 – June 3, 2022

The Boys are back in town this June, featuring Supernatural star Jensen Ackles in a new character for the show’s third season. The show has been a huge hit for Amazon Prime, and the streaming service hopes to continue producing quality work in their dark superhero drama.

The show’s cast was already strong, but adding the star power of Jensen Ackles will propel the show to a new level and bring in a huge fanbase.

Moon Knight – March 30, 2022

The next Marvel Disney+ installment will be Moon Knight, starring Oscar Isaac. The psychological sci-fi series will take the Marvel universe to a darker place than it’s been before in other Netflix shows.

The series will begin in March and contain six episodes. Apart from Isaac, it will also feature legendary actors Ethan Hawke and F. Murray Abraham.

Obi-Wan Kenobi – May 25, 2022

The other major Disney+ series coming in the next few months will be the new Star Wars series, Obi-Wan Kenobi. The announcements for the show have provoked major excitement from fans, as prequel stars Ewan McGregor and Hayden Christensen are set to return.

Though Hayden’s role is unclear as to whether he will be donning the Darth Vader suit or appearing as Anakin in flashbacks or dreams, fans are excited regardless.

Halo – March 24, 2022

The Halo series will be the next major venture into the streaming wars by new player Paramount+, following their recent success in 1883 and Mayor of Kingstown. The series will star actor Pablo Schreider, who audiences may know from The Wire, as Master Chief. Hopefully Master Chief will give fans more of his best quotes.

Fans of the game series are rightfully skeptical about the series, as video game adaptations have a bad reputation in the film industry. Hopefully, the series will satisfy fans’ cravings and give science fiction fans a new show to be excited for.

House Of The Dragon – No Release Date As Of Yet

Regardless of the ending of Game of Thrones, hopes are high for a success story for House of the Dragon. The show will feature a diverse cast of talented actors, including Doctor Who’s Matt Smith and actress Olivia Cooke.

The show will take place hundreds of years before the events of Game of Thrones, and explore the vast lore of the Targaryen dynasty, based on George R.R. Martin’s Fire and Blood.

The Lord Of The Rings: The Rings Of Power – September 2, 2022

Another prequel to a legendary fantasy series, premiering with a famously massive budget on Amazon Prime this fall, is The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power. The show, after recently debuting its trailer, is also a source of skepticism, as the films are held to such high regard that a failure would be unacceptable.

Hopefully, the series will not disappoint, as the cast is wonderful, portraying younger versions of many of the film series’ characters, and the budget will ensure a scenic world and exceptional visuals.
