As a TV drama about plane crash survivors stuck on an island, it was always clear that Lost would feature a lot of death. As the characters get to know each other and some friendships, loyalties, and romances form, the prospect of losing each other becomes even more terrifying as these survivors only have each other in this scary new world. Fans become attached to these characters through the intense flashbacks and how much everyone goes through on the island.

From the moment when Charlie knows that he’s going to drown to some other major character deaths, Reddit fans are picking the most heartbreaking scenes on Lost when they knew that their favorite character would meet their end.

10 Jin-Soo Kwon And Sun-Hwa Kwon

Jin and Sun are one of the best couples on Lost and it’s tragic thinking about how much time they spend away from each other.

One Redditor said that watching “Jin & Sun” die was one of the saddest parts of the show and Reddit user TeeKayTank replied, “it was heart-wrenching.” While the characters are finally with each other again and are trying to leave the island on a submarine, Sun is drowning, and Jin sacrifices himself.

9 Charlie Pace

Charlie has a tough life, as he starts using heroin as a member of his famous band Drive Shaft, and when he crashes on the island with the other survivors, he’s in a dark place. Charlie and Desmond go on a mission together on a boat but Charlie sacrifices himself and knows that he’s going to drown. Charlie writes a message on his hand for Desmond that says “Not Penny’s Boat” because he wants Desmond to be aware of what’s going on.

Reddit user BruceliusWayne wrote that Charlie is “a sympathetic character, and he seems to be getting his life in order when it happens.”

8 Boone Carlyle

Reddit user KingKolder counts Boone among the saddest Lost deaths “because it was very early on, and he wanted to die due to pain.”

After meeting Boone and his stepsister Shannon, Boone sees a tiny plane in a tree and while he’s investigating it, the plane falls and he dies. Viewers are just getting to know Boone and what a caring person he is, and it’s tough to think about everything that he will miss out on in his life.

7 Alex Rousseau

Fans learn Alex’s tragic life story: Ben Linus was supposed to murder Alex’s mother Danielle but didn’t and stole Alex when she was a baby. Keamy kills Alex, which is so hard to watch since Alex has been there for Jack and the other survivors many different times.

Reddit user jimbajuice thinks that Alex’s death is really heartbreaking, writing, “What did she ever do to deserve that (or anything really)?”

6 John Locke

There are many wild moments on Lost, and the most memorable might be learning that Locke has died and the Smoke Monster has been pretending to be him. Lost fans have questions about the Smoke Monster and this is such a dark explanation for what has been going on.

One Redditor wrote, “Locke was the saddest story and he finally found a place where he could be happy and he never got to go back.” After watching Locke start walking again and no longer needing his wheelchair after crashing on the island, fans knew that something mysterious would happen to this character. It’s awful thinking about how tough his entire life has been.

5 Juliet Burke

Lost fans meet Juliet as a tough, intelligent member of The Others. Juliet is considered an integral part of island life as women keep dying after becoming pregnant and Juliet can help.

Reddit user qaanaaqattaq wrote that Juliet’s death is sad as “she got so close to leaving the island so many times.” After wanting to live elsewhere and have a normal, happy life, Juliet dies after a bomb explodes in the hatch and she falls and hurts herself. After learning about Juliet’s kindness and watching her fall for Sawyer, it’s especially sad.

4 Jack Shepard

As the main character, Jack has quite the story arc, including the Lost love triangle between Jack, Kate, and Sawyer. Fans follow along with him from the very start of the show and while they know that he can be harsh and makes many mistakes, he has a good heart.

Reddit user stuntmanmike said that Jack’s death is said because of “how devastating I find his interaction with Hurley/Kate before the end to be.” The fan mentioned that Jack did do what he set out to do and he was always there for people who he loved.

3 Sayid Jarrah

Fans love Sayid, who was part of Iraq’s Special Republican Guard prior to the plane crash and the United States military captured. Sayid’s death scene is a particularly cruel one as he and Jack pretend to work for Dharma and Sayid is shot and hurt so badly that he won’t be able to come back for it.

Reddit user faeldaye said, “Sayid’s death affected me. It was just so quick and it felt like a gut punch.”

2 Libby Smith

Libby and Hurley are adorable together, sharing many small moments, like when Hurley wants them to have a picnic.

One Redditor said, “It was devastating watching Hurley after he finally found someone.” Michael shoots and kills Libby without meaning to, and Michael feels so guilty that he has visions of Libby’s ghost for a while.

1 Nadia Abed Jaseem

While Sayid develops strong feelings for Shannon on the island, he still loves Nadia, who he was friends with when they were growing up. When Sayid and the Oceanic flight survivors come back home, Sayid and Nadia see each other again and get married.

Nadia tragically dies when a car hits and kills her. It’s so hard to watch this scene knowing how long Sayid and Nadia spent apart and how thrilled they were to find each other. Reddit user mhall85 said, “that death scene is brutal.”
