Through the years, television series have featured characters who are best friends, otherwise known as “BFFs” (Best Friends Forever). Sometimes the best friends are true friends, there for one another through thick and thin, ready to run over at the drop of a hat when needed. Other times, the friendship is less intense, centered on superficial bonding on common interests. And then there are frenemies: friends who get along but are only there because they get something out of the friendship – turn your back and they won’t hesitate to stab it.

Regardless of the type of friendship, here are 5 of the best BFFs on television and the 5 worst to grace the small screen.

10 Blossom Russo And Six LeMeure: Blossom (Best)

These two teenage girls were so close and inseparable that Blossom’s single father even considered Six one of his own children, doling out advice and helping her through serious issues when she wasn’t comfortable going to her own divorced parents about them.

They shared a love for quirky fashion on this ’90s sitcom, most notably fun and flowery hats. And while they weren’t sisters by blood, they were as close as if they were.

9 Stephanie Tanner And Gianna “Gia” Mahan: Full House (Worst)

There’s always one friend a child has that their parents can’t stand. In Stephanie’s case on Full House, it was Gia. Growing up, Gia was a terrible influence. From a broken home, she was the resident “bad girl” who tried to convince Stephanie to get up to trouble or do things she shouldn’t.

While Stephanie supposedly had the opposite effect on Gia, clearly that didn’t take. Gia popped up in the sequel series Fuller House and was just as rebellious as an adult, with her own rebellious teenage daughter, to boot.

8 Cristina Yang And Meredith Grey: Grey’s Anatomy (Best)

Considered the “Twisted Sisters” on Grey’s Anatomy, Cristina and Meredith were each other’s “person:” the one each could turn to with anything, free from judgment. They knew how to comfort one another when they were down and just the right things to say in any situation.

Sure, they both had their own share of romantic love. But let’s be real: they were each other’s soulmates.

7 DJ Tanner/Fuller And Kimmy Gibbler: Full House, Fuller House (Worst)

The Tanners don’t have the greatest track record, and while it might sound odd to suggest that DJ and Kimmy’s friendship on Full House, and Fuller House, is one of the worst on TV given how they have each stuck their necks out for one another in so many ways, the friendship just never seemed right.

It almost seemed like DJ pitied Kimmy more than she loved her, and she treated her like a dimwitted pet she kept around. Kimmy was odd and eccentric and while they had all the makings of a wonderful friendship, and there was genuine love there, sometimes their relationship also seemed too co-dependent.

6 Lorelai Gilmore And Rory Gilmore: Gilmore Girls (Best)

What was so beautiful about this friendship on Gilmore Girls was that it was between a mother and a daughter. Lorelai gave birth to Rory when she was just 16 years old, which meant she was just 32 when Rory herself turned 16.

Because Lorelai was so young, she understood a lot of what Rory was going through, more so than an older parent from a completely other generation might. This meant they shared so much with one another. Rory relied on her mother more than anyone else and Lorelai found a way to balance being a mom with being a friend.

5 Ted Mosby And Barney Stinson: How I Met Your Mother (Worst)

Ted Mosby and Barney Stinson were part of a larger group of friends on How I Met Your Mother that also included Marshall, Lily, and Robin. And while technically Marshall had been Ted’s best friend since college, once his girlfriend then wife Lily effectively became his BFF, Barney swept in to suggest that he was Ted’s bestie instead.

Yet they had nothing in common and often seemed annoyed with one another whenever they were together. Barney would try to pick up women for Ted (“Haaave you met Ted?”) and Ted would often be repulsed by Barney and his dirty doings. But the putrid icing on the friendship cake? There were both in love with the same woman. Barney pursued Robin even though he knew she was Ted’s ex and he still had feelings for her, while Ted was going to profess his love to Robin on her and Barney’s wedding day!

4 Rachel Green And Monica Geller: Friends (Best)

Friends since high school, when Monica was much bigger and Ross was secretly pining for Rachel, they had come a long way. They shared an apartment as young adults and pretty much every aspect of their life when conversing at the kitchen table, on the balcony, or, of course, at Central Perk.

Sure, they were part of a larger group of friends that also included Chandler, Ross, Joey, and Phoebe. But when it comes to tight, long-lasting bonds, theirs was unbreakable.

3 Chandler Bing And Joey Tribbiani: Friends (Worst)

Speaking of friends, while Chandler and Joey were like brothers on Friends, there was something off about the friendship. Chandler constantly mocked Joey, insulted him, and made him feel less than.

Chandler helped Joey out and probably paid for most of the apartment when Joey was struggling to find acting gigs. And Joey helped Chandler through tough times by being there for him and making him laugh (though Chandler was most often turning up his nose atJoey versus laughing with him.) But were they true friends or was Chandler simply using Joey to avoid being lonely?

2 Michael “J.D.” Dorian And Christopher Turk: Scrubs (Best)

How can you possibly beat two doctors who act like goofy frat boys when it comes to the best BFFs on television? These two were hilarious together on Scrubs. Besties since college when they were paired together as roommates and starting out as interns at the same hospital on the same day, they literally moved up in their careers, side-by-side.

And they likewise stuck together in their personal lives as well. They had the same interests in everything from music to sports and robots and even believed they could communicate with one another telepathically. The creepiest (or cutest?) part: they had pet names for one another, Chocolate Bear and Vanilla Bear!

1 Dawson Leery And Pacey Witter: Dawson’s Creek (Worst)

Another case of a love triangle, Dawson and Pacey were the worst when it came to best friends who were more like frenemies. While much of Dawson’s Creek was centered around how Dawson was best friends with Joey, there were always some romantic undertones. But it was Pacey who was her true love.

It was clear that after Joey realized she was in love with Pacey and left for the summer with him that Pacey and Dawson’s friendship would never be the same. But were they really ever truly best friends anyway?
