The audience’s disappointment in a movie is commonly the result of great marketing, as it’s the marketing team’s job to promote the movie, build hype, and get potential viewers as excited as possible. However, it could also be because it was a sequel that was following a beloved movie, or even because a certain celebrated director helmed the project.

And as most movies are based on existing properties these days, disappointment could even stem from the adaptation not being faithful enough to the source material. There is an infinite amount of reason why audiences could be let down, but either way, Redditors were overwhelmingly disappointed by these movies the most.

SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY

X-Men: Apocalypse (2016)

LearnHumility was most disappointed with X-Men: Apocalypse. The Redditor goes into scathing detail about the whole movie, including that “the four horsemen look like a bunch of rejected band members.” The film made some strange choices, as the four horsemen standing in Auschwitz in their goofy outfits and talking about the meaning of the Holocaust is more than a little jarring.

However, with a series whose quality is as inconsistent as X-Men‘s, fans shouldn’t really have had their hopes up with the eighth installment. But coming off the one-two punch on First Class and Days of Future Past, audiences really did deserve more.

Batman V Superman: Dawn Of Justice (2016)

There’s a lot wrong with Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, but SolomonRed singles out the death of Superman. They posit that “it should have been ten years in the making and a huge event.” As Superman died before The Justice League was even released, the moment felt completely meaningless, as audiences knew the character would still return for the 2017 movie.

On top of that, audiences barely knew the character enough to care in the first place, and as the Redditor states, it would have been a lot more effective a couple more movies down the line. However, as Batman v Superman has the potential to be a great movie, it could still be remade in years.

Tenet (2020)

Outside of superhero movies, the only other theatrical releases that could be considered cinematic events are the films from director Christopher Nolan. He is the only filmmaker who can write and direct original movies that gross $700 million in this day and age.

His latest film, Tenet, was gearing up to be his most exciting and mind-bending yet, but Trev_Takes_Photos was bitterly disappointed by the time-traveling movie. The Redditor mostly takes issue with the noise, explaining that they “couldn’t even hear what was going on,” which is a common criticism of the film. And it doesn’t help when the dialogue in Tenet is so important.

The Matrix Reloaded (2003)

Of all the disappointing movie sequels that have been released over the decades, Belizeanheat accuses The Matrix Reloaded of being the worst offender. They remember that the “second Matrix had the most banger trailer of all time and I couldn’t believe how uninteresting it ended up being.

The movie is only bad when compared to its predecessor, as The Matrix was so revolutionary at the time. And with the newly released The Matrix Resurrections, which has been polarizing, to say the least, Reloaded is now the second-best movie of the four in the series. However, there’s no denying the negative reaction to the film when it was first released.

Mother! (2017)

mother! isn’t exactly a huge blockbuster movie with a marketing budget of hundreds of millions of dollars to get audiences hyped. However, there were still tons of reasons to be excited about the mid-budget thriller movie. It starred Jennifer Lawrence, promised a compelling mystery, and it comes from the mind of the cinema auteur Darren Aronofsky.

GobbleGoblinGobble was most disappointed by the movie, despite being a fan of the director, citing that it was “heavy-handed and weird and boring and gross.” The Redditor wasn’t the only one left disappointed, as it’s one of the very few movies to have an “F” CinemaScore.

The Lost World: Jurassic Park (1997)

Between the sweeping music score from John Williams, the groundbreaking visual effects, and the gripping narrative, many consider Jurassic Park to be the perfect movie. So it’s no surprise that fans were so excited for the sequel. Unfortunately, it ended up being a huge disappointment, and Themightyhetfield still remembers seeing it for the first time.

The Redditor mentions that The Lost World “was a rough theater-going experience.” As the movie replaces all of the beloved characters with ones that are dull and unmemorable, and almost jumps the shark in the way it brings the T-rex to San Diego, it was the first of many underwhelming Jurassic Park sequels.

Us (2019)

It isn’t often when general audiences get excited about a movie based on the director attached to the project, but Us was one of those rare cases. Jordan Peele was riding high on the success of Get Out, and everyone was waiting to see what he’d do next. The result was Us.

It’s a chilling home invasion movie about doppelgangers, but Emperormanlet was one of the few left disappointed by the film. They didn’t think the movie was coherent and they “could not believe how good the reviews were on Rotten Tomatoes after watching it.

Avatar: The Last Airbender (2010)

The Avatar: The Last Airbender TV show has a huge existing and dedicated following, so there was a lot of pressure to deliver a faithful live-action remake. Unfortunately, the 2010 adaption came off as completely insulting to the fanbase, and some Redditors still aren’t over it.

AmberJill28 explains that they “hated it more with every minute I thought about it after watching it,” as it’s completely joyless and full of plotholes. However, regardless of how bad the movie is and how much it was slammed by critics, it’s still one of the highest-grossing Shyamalan movies.

The Spirit (2008)

The Spirit is based in the same world as Sin City and is directed by Frank Miller, who co-directed the 2005 movie and even created the comic book. So if anybody could have created a great adaptation of The Spirit, it was him. Unfortunately, as the 2008 film imitated Sin City’s unique art direction, it was less impressive a second time around.

WatchMoreMovies puts it best when they say “I loved Sin City and I was convinced it would be every bit as good. It was a disaster.” Given how disappointed the Redditor was with The Spirit, who knows what they thought about Sin City: A Dame To Kill For, which is one of the most disappointing follow-ups to one of the best films ever.
