Director McG’s straight-to-Netflix suburban horror-comedy The Babysitter left viewers with some big unanswered questions about the identity and origins of Bee, the blood-demanding teenage coven leader and title character. Who is she? How old is she? Where did she get her book? Where and how did she find and recruit members for her coven. Is she even a normal human being at all?

Released in 2017 by the streaming giant Netflix, The Babysitter tells the story of Cole Johnson (Judah Lewis), an awkward suburban twelve year old who, oblivious to the crush his neighbor Melanie has on him, harbors an all consuming crush on his high school age babysitter, Bee, played by Samara Weaving. Bee is every twelve year old boy’s dream girl: a statuesque blonde bombshell, Bee saves Cole from bullies, drives a convertible, engages in geeky fandom conversations, swears like a sailor, and threads a fine line between  banter and flirting. Unlike pretty much everyone else in his life, Bee at least treats him as something of an adult, or at least a teenage contemporary, rather than a little kid. Bee is the only one Cole can open himself up to.

When Cole’s parents, played by Leslie Bibb and Ken Marino, head out for a weekend getaway in hopes of saving their marriage, Cole gets to spend the entire weekend with Bee. After an awesome night with Bee that includes being allowed a double shot of whiskey (though hedumps his shot in a potted plant), Cole is sent to bed. After hearing strange noises from downstairs, Cole is encouraged via text by Melanie to sneak out of his room and spy on what Bee is up.

The Babysitter: Who Is Bee?

What at first appears to be a hybrid game of spin-the-bottle/truth or dare with a group of her fellow high-schoolers quickly goes all to hell when Bee pulls out knives and stabs Samuel in the head to collect his blood for some kind of dark ritual. Turns out, Bee is the leader of coven engaged in blood magic. What follows is a blood-soaked Home Alone scenario as Cole tries to stay one step ahead of the teen cult members. The members of her coven appear to be new recruits who joined up because Bee promises them their wishes would come true. There is an unmistakeable “Queen Bee” aspect to Bee’s charismatic pull with the members of her coven.

How Did Bee Get Involved With The Satanic Cult?

The blood magic, a mysterious ancient spell book, and some clues dropped by Bee about making a deal with the devil “a long time ago” to achieve her dreams suggest that Bee is far older than she appears. Bee’s allusions to the number of times she has done this and the blood sacrifices she presides over may suggest that Bee is far older than her youthful appearance would suggest. These echo historical trials where “witches” were accused, often without evidence, of sacrificing virgins and bathing in their blood in order to keep themselves young.

With The Babysitter‘s focus on comedy horror set pieces, viewers aren’t given much detail on who or what exactly Bee is. Viewers aren’t given any real insight into Bee’s personal life. Nothing is known about her personal life such as where she lives. She’s just simply Cole’s babysitter, though perhaps more of this will be explored in the sequel.
