During Rachel Recchia’s hometown date on The Bachelor season 26, her raspy voice was much more hoarse than usual. Throughout the season, she has become known for her whispering when she talks to Clayton, which many fans find endearing. Fan-favorite Rachel, a 25-year-old commercial pilot and flight instructor from Clermont, Florida, is one of the frontrunners to win Clayton’s season. Clayton must now decide if he wants to take Rachel, Susie Evans, and/or Gabby Windey to the fantasy suites.

At the beginning of her hometown date, Rachel said that she was losing her voice. But despite how she might sound, she was so excited to get the date started. Rachel’s hometown date was full of adventure as she and Clayton rented canoes from King’s Landing in Florida. The area is home to scary creatures such as alligators, bears, and spiders, but the most intimidating aspect of the date was Rachel’s father, Tony, whom she feared would be mean to Clayton due to his past behavior with her ex-boyfriends. Alas, Tony turned out to be a softie and gave Clayton his blessing in the form of a pat on the arm at the end of the night, which was a secret signal that he and Clayton had agreed upon earlier if Tony was convinced that Rachel really loved him. Throughout the date, Rachel’s voice became raspier and raspier, until she was only able to whisper that she was falling in love with Clayton.

As it would be expected from Bachelor Nation, viewers keeping up with Clayton’s season of The Bachelor took to social media to wonder if Rachel had gotten sick and why she would be on a date with Clayton if she was, particularly during a pandemic. Per Distractify, Rachel explained in an Instagram Story that she had been sick that week, which resulted in the loss of her voice. With that said, Rachel reiterated she didn’t have COVID-19. Otherwise, she probably lost her voice due to the long trip from Vienna to Florida in such a short period of time. Although Rachel might have needed time to rest to recover from her illness, production kept her on their schedule.

In a recent interview with Tia Booth, Mike Johnson, and Natasha Parker on the Click Bait podcast (included above), Natasha asked Rachel about why she was whispering during her and Clayton’s first one-on-one date. Rachel admitted that she did not remember doing it. She explained, “When you’re in that environment for the first time, it’s crazy. There’s so much happening. And you’re having your own moment sometimes.” Rachel felt like when she was talking to Clayton, she was unsure if her microphone would pick up what was being said. But even in the event that it did, she did not think that the show would air such a small moment between her and Clayton. Rachel laughed and said that the fact that she whispers was something new that she learned about herself, and the hosts agreed that it was very cute.

Rachel is a good sport who can laugh at herself. Even though she lost her actual voice during her hometown date, she found the words to tell Clayton that she loved him. Overall, Rachel has conducted herself with class and dignity throughout this journey. Hopefully, Rachel’s voice will recover enough to give a resounding “yes” if Clayton proposes to her and offers her his final rose.
