Former Catwoman actor Anne Hathaway says that Zoe Kravitz is the perfect choice to take over the role in Matt Reeves’ The Batman. Hathaway became the third actor to play Catwoman in just two decades when she took on the role for The Dark Knight Rises, the final film in Christopher Nolan’s trilogy. Previously, Halle Berry had played the character in the terrible 2004 movie, and Michelle Pfeiffer had played Selina Kyle to much greater effect in Tim Burton’s 1992 sequel, Batman Returns.

Now, Kravitz, the daughter of actor Lisa Bonet and musician Lenny Kravitz, is stepping into the role, playing Catwoman opposite Robert Pattinson’s Batman. The first trailer for the movie, released in August, only gave a brief glimpse of Kravitz in character breaking into a safe, but further funeral scene set photos have revealed more. Those photos show Kyle dressed up attending the funeral seen in the trailer, alongside Pattinson, as well as Colin Farrell, who is unrecognizable as Oswald Cobblepot, aka The Penguin. Further set photos show Catwoman in costume riding on a motorcycle alongside Batman, hinting they’ll team up in this movie, as they’ve done before.

Now, Hathaway has weighed in on what she thinks of Kravitz as Catwoman during an interview with Collider to promote The Witches. The final question of the interview is about what advice Hathaway would give Kravitz, and she replies saying she doesn’t need any. Hathaway adds that like her own role as the Grand High Witch, which was first performed by Anjelica Huston, each actor and director needs to bring their own interpretation to Catwoman. She ends by saying that she thinks Kravitz is the “perfect choice” for the role. You can read her full comments below:

You saw the picture of her coming down those stairs, right? Yeah, she doesn’t need my advice. If I had any advice it would be literally don’t listen to anybody because I think the only way to play that role is to give your version of it. All of us had different directors and all of our interpretations were specific to the films that they were in, kind of like my Grand High Witch is specific to Bob Zemeckis and Anjelica Huston’s is specific to Nicolas Roeg’s, and that’s great! And all the Jokers were specific to each director they have, and so I don’t think you can get too bogged down with the comparison. And especially when you’re not the one doing it because your job is to give yours. And I’m so excited to see what she does with it. I thought she was a perfect choice.

Hathaway’s effusive comments on Kravitz are understandable. She certainly wouldn’t wish the actor whose taken over the mantle of Catwoman from her any ill will. But still, her endorsement is a positive sign, added to many others that hint Reeves is taking charge of an interesting and unique take on the citizens of Gotham in The Batman. Kravitz seems committed to the role, having read the Batman: Year One comic, as well as a number of others from that comics line, to prepare for the role.

Hopefully her Catwoman is more Hathaway/Pfeiffer than Berry, though there’s little chance of that happening, based on the dark and intense footage seen in the first trailer for The Batman. Despite a number of sneak peeks, and the existence of the trailer, audiences still have a long wait ahead of them to see Kravitz in action on the big screen. The Batman is still in production until early 2021, only releasing in theaters in 2022.
