The Batman director Matt Reeves has confirmed that the symbol on Robert Pattinson’s Batsuit is not crafted from the gun that killed Bruce Wayne’s parents. Pattinson is set to debut as Bruce Wayne in his first outing as the iconic DC hero as the Caped Crusader must take down Paul Dano’s Riddler in the highly-anticipated movie. Following Covid-related delays, The Batman will hit theaters on March 4.

The Batsuit is inextricably linked to Batman. In fact, some have argued that Bruce Wayne while in the Batsuit is the “real” Bruce, while his public persona is the mask he wears. This has led to numerous onscreen incarnations of his outfit, from the heavy rubber of Michael Keaton, to the more grounded suits of the Christopher Nolan era, to the Jim Lee-inspired suits of the Zack Snyder movies. Matt Reeves’ take on Batman’s suit is far more grounded and tactical than previous iterations and many have theorized that the heavy-looking, metallic Bat symbol on his suit is actually the gun used to murder Thomas and Martha Wayne.

With The Batman gearing up to hit theaters next week, the press tour for the film is in full swing, with many close to the movie finally able to answer questions they hadn’t been able to previously. In fact, in a recent interview with HeyUGuys, Matt Reeves addressed questions about the Batsuit’s symbol and confirmed that it is not made from the gun that killed Bruce Wayne’s parents, as some had theorized. Reeves said:

Well I wanted it to be something that was a practical use. It’s not the gun. That was interesting that people were speculating that’s what it was. What people did happen on that’s right is I wanted it to be not just an emblem but I wanted it to be something tactical and functional… That’s actually a glauca knife that he uses in a couple of places in the movie. So somewhere along the way I said ‘I want to figure out a way that this is something that we can see him using it. I want to see him use that knife.’ The knife had been written into the script, so the idea was is there a way we can take that knife and make it the bat symbol, and that was what they set out to do.

So fans who theorized that the symbol was made from Joe Chill’s gun were not quite right. However, the interesting, weapon-like design of the symbol does indeed serve a purpose on the suit. As Reeves explained, the symbol serves a functional purpose as a glauca knife, which is a knife with a blade that folds into its handle, that Batman uses throughout the movie. However, it’s unclear if he uses it as an offensive weapon or as a tool at this time.

The notion of making the Batsuit’s symbol a functional tool in Batman’s arsenal is nothing new. The knife stored on his chest is a new concept for the films, but in the source comics, the symbol has served as a flashlight and even a heavily armored focal point for enemies to focus their fire at – protecting Batman’s head in the process. In fact, there’s an argument to be made that a master tactician such as Batman wouldn’t waste precious real estate on his suit simply to fit a symbol of his trauma. Whatever the case, audiences will get to see Bruce Wayne use that symbol as a knife when The Batman hits theaters.
